An interesting 'do almost nothing' experiment. Let vegetables just go.

Last fall we had too many raised beds [Why? Outside the scope of this forum.] and my wife dumped the little bits of seed from the bottoms of old seed packs from previous summers. It was automatically watered.

First fall kale came up and tiny yellow birds hung around it all winter. Chard came up and at first was pretty. Carrots came up and are just now blooming and a multitude of flying insects just love them. We actually harvested some romaine in the spring. It is about to bolt. Beets may bolt next. There are three thus far boring sunflowers and some tomatoes. There is one Jalapeño pepper and something that might be an Armenian cucumber.

No care since last fall.

Kind of interesting. I've been thinking about trying a zero maintenance garden experiment myself. Saw a thing on growing potatoes and preparing soil the easy way, and I don't have exactly what's used there, but I have some stuff that might work.

Follow-up to July 11, 2017 above. Wife just dug up a large purple carrot that had overwintered there. It was quite sweet and delicious.

Well, last season, we had a totally 'feral' garden. Whatever came up from the previous year's compost dumped in during the spring. (There was/is a war going on with invading mint that apparently is set on world domination.) We got pumpkins, cantalope, acorn squash, cukes and plenty of cherry tomatoes - a variant that had been developed by a local garden center. Most prolific...indeed, without a killing frost thus far, there was still ripening fruit when I pulled the plants three days ago, Single digit wind chills for tomorrow morning, though.
