Why is it too high? It really depends upon how the shade falls? Most of my lamps, which are vintage, are around that height and one pair is 45" or so. But its really the shade and whether you can see the bulbs that makes a difference.

A taller lamp draws the eye up, gives illusion of a higher ceiling. Like palimpsest says, it's the shade that makes the difference. You like it, get it and try it out in different places.

Hm, I've been measuring, and all my lamps are at about 48".

But sounds like I can make it work with a larger shade.

Also relative mass is important. The table can't appear too delicate for the table. I have a tall lamp that's to sit on a relatively spindly spiderleg table but the lamp base is relatively delicate and narrow .
