Hi Gerald, I'm no pro (far from it!) but it sounds iffy...as if it could look odd and make the shutters appear more fake. The size of the windows also enters in. Each shutter should be half the window's width. Can you post a photo?

Well, the windows are definitely sized right for shutters, and to me they could look good. When you say "stepped-out" you mean the windows are just recessed back a bit? I thought it meant a raised border of brick around each window on top of the other brick...if that makes sense. This seems more of a possibility now. Let's see what some of the pros here think. Personally, I can also see shutters on the far left window for balance.

I have this photo of a family member's home. If you look closely at the shutters on the left (click to enlarge) it makes me see how the shutters could possibly be fitted onto your windows.

This isn't perfect, but I thought it may help you visualize. I would pick one of the lighter colors in your stone for shutters and use paneled shutters as opposed to louvered. I also painted your trim a creamier color and it's really hard to see, but I added a decorative element in your gable as well. Hope this helps!
