Hoya Serpens

I finally gave in and ordered this Hoya, despite all the claims it's difficult to grow and bloom. Does anyone else have this Hoya? Tips on how not to murder it would be nice lol

I just think the tiny round leaves and green fuzzy blooms are too adorable not to at least give it a try. Thanks!

I have it and ignore it and hope it does it's thing. So far it's working well. :D Not helpful at all I know. I think the only reason it's happy here is because I live in a cold place. My plant was happily growing and putting out new growth but I let it get to dry recently and all it's growth tips died off. It's sitting on my bathroom window sill deciding whether or not it should forgive me and start growing again. I expect it to start growing again come Spring.... It's a very cute lil hoya!

Keep inside in a cool (65-70F), but not frigid area. Keep lightly damp and brightly lit. It will grow fast for you!

If it likes cool conditions and bright light it'll thrive here! Lol

    Wish me luck!

My serpens is growing fine, albeit slowly outside on my porch here in Central Florida. This is one of the hottest summers we have had and the heat doesn't phase it. It's still a small plant and it has multiple peduncles with buds that still haven't grown to maturity even though they've been trying to since spring. Same with my shepherdii. I don't know the cause. Maybe the plants aren't mature enough. Another note, I don't think serpens likes too much water. If it gets too much water a couple leaves will yellow and fall off but this seems common for this species. Mine hardly gets any sun either, except maybe when the sun is setting and it's parallel to the back porch. Good luck, I think the plant is easier than most give it credit for. Benign neglect is key I think!

Thank you Tom! I really appreciate all your input on this plant, there's not very much online and the info I have found people condemn this plant as very hard to keep! Mine has a couple peduncles on it too, I realized after unboxing. I'm thinking it's one of those 'polyneura' types that puts out baby peduncles and even mature ones, but they take their time to actually produce! Here's to a happy healthy Serpens, blooms or no blooms! :)

You're very welcome! I was weary at first too, but sometimes you just have to see for yourself. I find a lot of advice can be wrong or just doesn't apply to me. I think its difficulty is overhyped. Time will tell. Here's to future flowers, hopefully sooner rather than later!

I agree with that 100%, you really do have to just see for yourself how the plant responds to you and the conditions you provide it with.

I found this photo online, and the leaves look so shiny and green! Curious as to why that would be with this particular specimen.

Over-fertilizing and low light or grow lights will allow the leaves to be dark green. Sunlight will bleach the leaves to a lighter shade of green. And I believe that photo is from Vermont Hoyas and he grows indoors so that's why it's dark green. That's a real specimen, isn't it?

    They also look wet.

I gave the foliage a shower when it arrived like I do all my plants, and the leaves didn't turn that dark shiny green.

Tom I am just realizing that that is front Vermont Hoyas page so credit all to him for that beautiful plant. Hopefully mine will be as beautiful someday :) I use growlights too so maybe I'll get that attractive dark green!

It will be, just give it time! My serpens just started putting out more new vines so I'm happy. But it'll be a while before ours reach that size. ;)

Here's to the years to come :) And to us having huge Serpens!

My serpens has forgiven me! I counted 3 new growth points the other day but a quick rummage through it's leaves and vines has revealed 9!! Hopefully once spring sets in it will take right off.

Hi, I was wondering if you could please tell me here were you able to order it? I've been looking for it, without luck. Thank you!

I got one last August from the Violet Barn. You have to keep an eye on their site because they sell out fast. It is small, but I have not had any difficulty keeping it alive. It even has a peduncle that I am watching.

    Thank you!

Serpens is still chugging along for me. Lots of peduncles that get fat like they want to bloom but don't. Still trying!

I have a peduncle on mine too, but it hasn't bloomed either. I just keep waiting!
