Very ambitious buds, Tom :)) I remember grafting clementine this year and it had flower and branches grow ( cleft graft ). I removed the tiny fruit afterwards.

I would think you'd want to encourage leaves. Are you going to remove the buds eventually?

I started two Satsumas from cuttings and they wanted to bloom too. I removed the blossoms when they were large enough for me to do it safely.

Nice job. What rootstock is it on. I to have found that all the meiwa does is produce flowers. I will need toi see if my Fukushu to C35 takes and if I can find a meiwa bud that is not a flower bud I'll try one of those.

I would surely cut those trifoliate leaves below your bud; if not, the new scion will not grow well.

Steve, this one is on a C-35. The other Meiwas I grafted are mostly on C-35, but I think I also have one on Kuharske and/or US-897... I'll have to check.

John, I could do that, but I figured that the trifoliate leaves were still making food for the plant. I didn't think those leaves would cause issues; what effect do they have?

Tom.... they are more aggressive than your scion and will suck the life out of your new tree to propagate themselves. I would cut them now. Once your new bud begins to grow the trifoliate leaves are only producing food for themselves.
