In containers figs need water and fertilizer, inground the roots get much from the earth but still benefit once in a while of fertilization.

Give container a watering and afterwards lift lip of container and get a feel for its weight, it will get lighter and lighter as the days go by depending on climate then you have a feel for when it needs water.

Yes figs will start out tiny then keep growing to a certain size depending on cultivar then stay same size for good while then the week of ripening they will suddenly go through a change by swelling and turning color.

Most figs when ripe droop downwards and become pillow soft.

Here in this picture notice green hardy chicago fig and a few of same that turned purple still erect then notice the drooping one that is ready to pick.

Thanks for the comment, watering then is just like any other container grown plant and they don't require a dry environment for part of the year. What kind of fertilize?

Everyone uses different types and even some add what is called micro nutrients with their fertilizer.

I keep it very simple and have been using it for many many years and it works for this grower.

Water soluble miracle grow and they do just fine.
