saving a hoya question

Hi everyone,

I am a hosta addict and now becoming a Hoya addict also.

I was picking up some free stuff and noticed a large potted plant just sitting in a bucket of rainwater in with a bunch of other stuff to be thrown out.

It was a Hoya and the story on it was that it was a wedding gift that has been handed down from grandmother to mother and so on. I was told that it was a good size plant that was a wedding gift over 50 years ago.

I couldn't just let it be thrown out,so I brought it home.

It had been sitting in water for months and in full sun and most of the leaves are very pale yellow,I guess that it had not been repotted for 20 years.

I repotted it and there no signs of root rot and the leaves and stems are firm,I am wondering what to do next with it to try to save it,there seems to signs of color coming back into some of the leaves,

thanks for any advice on this,

Dave

Sounds like a wonderful, huge Hoya that is probably covered in peduncles. You are so lucky to have saved it. Since you say that there is no signs of rot, doesn't sound like there is anything left to do but enjoy it for years to come. The sun bleaching is only cosmetic. I have one I purchased like that and it's covered in peduncles. I keep it in full sun the way the nursery kept it. I water it a bit more than my others and of course fertilize it. Its my only constant booming Hoya for now...I loved your story on the plant and congratulations on being at the right place at the right time!

Yes it is covered with peduncles, Had to stop the wife from trying to prune it back.

I hope I'm taking care of it correctly, Hate to think that after all its been through that I will be the one that kills it. I am a plant rescuer which is not necessarily a good thing.

Oh,I did have to buy a Hoya at the big box store just to compare the two.

Is it a Hoya carnosa? Please post a pic when she is all settled into her new home.

Feed it 1/4 strength water soluble fertilizerevery time you water (alternatively, you can use a good slow-release fertilizer, like Osmocote).

Make sure you don't over-water (if anything, for most Hoyas, it is better to err on the side of caution and "forget" a watering). If it is carnosa, and potted up in a really fast draining mix (like orchid bark, perlite and LECA), you can get away with watering every 10 days or so. If you have used potting soil as your medium, you should water less frequently.

Bright, indirect sunlight is the general rule for most species, but most will tolerate (and require) full exposure artificial lighting. If you have carnosa, it requires less light, but you still want to expose it to bright enough light for it to flower. A West or South exposed window will work. Alternatively, you can grow carnosa outside, in a protected from full sun and high winds area (like an East exposed porch/awning), in the warmer months, up until nighttime temps dip below 50F (or if you start noticing your plant is stressed).

Photos, please, when you have time!

Thank you for all the info, Yes I believe it is a Carnosa.

I will post a photo as soon as we agree on where she is going to be in the house, Right now she is sitting in a south facing window (protected from direct sun).
