Using Tarn-X -- that is definitely a no-no! Not good for the silver.

OK. That sounds reasonable. However, it doesn't necessarily explain the failure of the Wright's. do you think it was just getting old? Items began turning yellow rather than black, and it seemed to occur faster than regular tarnish in years past. What polish would you all suggest?

I thought the yellow was when you were polishing -- the yellow is a color it turns after you polish . . . the "patina" of polished silver develops over time and it takes a long long time to turn black! And how long does it take to turn "yellow"?

Martha: no, after polish it is nice silver. Instead of a slow blackening, it turns yellowish in perhaps three months, maybe six. I didn't used to determine time to polish; perhaps every year or so? I'm not certain about the yellowing time either but it was happening to everything I polished with the Wright's Polish (and then more so with the Tarn-X.

Were these plated items? Perhaps plated over brass? And you were removing all the silver and being left with just the brass?
There was a lot of "stuff" on the market a few years back from India which was brass very thinly plated with silver....almost like a wash. That silver disappeared after about the 4th polishing. I know I had a lovely "silver" champagne cooler that looked great at Christmas with a poinsettia.

Some of my silver I don't polish that often and it never tarnishes to "black" in three or six months. It just sort of gets unshiney and I don't know how to describe it -- it doesn't look bad (from across the room -- LOL) -- but it doesn't look all pretty and nice either (I'm talking my silver tea/coffee service and tray).

I am gathering that none of you has seen this yellowing and that it is therefore unique to me and my polishes. I am just noticing that this may be a lighting effect. In evening electric light and down in my hand, a piece of my Rogers Bros. Remembrance set appears more blackish and I can see that the tarnish can partially be removed onto my hand. I suppose tarnish is always removable in that manner but I wasn't paying attention since I didn't appear to have problems before.

I said I took my coffee/tea set DOWN because it is displayed on top of a china cabinet. Perhaps the yellow/orange is most obvious in sunlight viewed from below. I will move things around and see if I can learn anything about lighting effects. I think the only regular polish available here would be Wright's. I guess unless someone suggests something else, that I will get some and date my next polish session.

I use Wrights...or international. If your silver is Rogers Bros, for sure it's not Indian

My polished silver turns yellow as well(even jewelry), and always has within 6 months of polishing. It is just what silver does when it is sitting out in the air of your home. If you own a silver polishing cloth...available in the big box stores near the jewelry....you can wipe it down every month or so, and voila...no more yellow. I like to polish silver, so I just re-polish every quarter and the problem is solved. I have/use/display a number of antique pieces and they love being handled, and cleaned every 2 or 3 months!!

I have a lot of older silver plate, and I've never had/seen the yellowing 'problem'. Mine just turns black and that's when I know it's time to be cleaned. I use Bartenders cleanser.
