tiny toy room - ideas please!

Hi! I am currently planning out renovations to my house. In the current layout we love, there is a 6' x 6' room i would like to make a toy room/video game room for my two elementary school age boys. does anyone have any ideas as to how i could acheive this?

Are their video games on a TV or on, say, laptops or tablets? the latter is easier to accommodate, as you could just set up a zone with a small table and a couple of chairs for various busy work, with a book case and/or toy bins nearby, and then you could put a couple of beanbag or other comfy chairs in a different zone, like the opposite corner. The table might have to do double duty to really leave room for storage.

6' x 6' is awfully tiny. It's really more like a closet, not a room.

That is a closet. Close the door on it. Carpet the space with a cushy remnant and leave it EMPTY, add a light, and let them use their imaginations in there. Forts, books , a hideaway, a flashlight, a sleepover with the sleeping bags.... whatever! . It's a cardboard box in the yard, only it's in the house. Kids love, love , love small empty spaces. Let them surprise you. Within reason of course ! Hide the i pad for a while. : ) My bet is they won't miss it.

Love Jan's idea. Perfect. Especially in this age of electronics sucking the creative energy out of children. Get carpet squares in an interesting pattern and color. Check on line at Flor.com for some great ideas. Let them go from there.

I would definitely mount the tv on the wall and use floating shelves for the gaming console and hang hooks for storing the controllers. You could play with the idea of some fold up seating that can be put away when they aren't using it for the tv/gaming so they will have more space for playing with toys. Not sure if there is space between wall studs for you to do some small built-ins but if there is that would be a good idea too.

You could use peg board or slat wall to help with storage/organization too. I think a 6x6 play room is definitely doable!

What do they like to play with? If they like toy cars use magnetic strips to store them, make the carpet or flooring double as a race track or town to drive the cars on. Check out closet playroom or closet gaming room ideas on pinterest...the possibilities are endless!

Far too much well intended parental energy goes into making "play" these days . Play is literally defined by making stuff up, by imagining, by digging in the house for stuff that has nothing to do with toys! Blankets....... boxes.... flashlights, , cans and bottles, trucks, dolls , oh hell, it's been so long I can't remember! The point is you don't need to amuse any child to the degree that takes place today, let alone make yourself crazy over decor. These images of the cutsie play space are created to....... SELL YOU STUFF!!

Close the door on the six x six space....tell them they can write on the walls.....Then go have some wine, catch up on DVR and leave them alone. I hear muffled giggles..???

Flo is right about Flor. Fun and cushy.!!

Thank you for the suggestion. Just a note for those saying kids don't need a toy room, let them use imagination etc. Not that it matters, but my kids maybe get 1 hour of screen time. Neither of them have an iPad or tablet. We do not have cable or satellite. That being said, they do like to play video games. That is their hour. So I would like a place for them. Adults don't "need" most of what they have. This is my children's home too. And I would like for them to have a space that is theirs, besides their bedrooms. Toys clutter, even when tidied. I am not looking to create play for my kids. But I am looking for ideas to create a space just for them.

The problem is then .....find a little bigger space, as six by six for what you're attempting is just too dang small. Even with a flat screen tv and a bench to sit on, they are literally on top of the screen. Buy some craft paper, tape it together to the dimensions of 6 x 6......and see what happens with any storage and a seat of sorts.

1 - Open out the wall between the 6x6 room and the sitting area and turn it into a bookcase alcove. Put a comfy chair and a lamp there.

2 - Put shelves and pegboard in it for toy storage and a cushy carpet on the floor. let the kids use it for a fort or something.
