It is one of a series of panicle hydrangeas bred in Boskoop in the Netherlands, all under the Magical trade name..........Magical Flame, Magical Fire, Magical Candle, Magical Starlight, Magical Vesuvio, Magical Sweet Summer ( yours) and probably a few others. Some variation in flower coloring and shading distinguishes them and they are supposed to have a compact growth habit. Previously sold only in Europe and the UK, they are infrequently encountered here in North America.

Going on a bit of a personal rant here but hydrangeas seem to be the current "hot" plant on the horticultural horizon and a new variety hits the market on almost a daily basis. Usually they are accompanied by all manner of hoopla touting them to have this or that feature that makes them special or unique. IMO, this is an overstatement - most are indistinguishable from others already on the market and they tend to all blend together with one or two notable exceptions. I find this to be true with this series - other than a more compact growth habit (4-5'), they are just the same as any other Hydrangea paniculata on the market...........no better - no worse. And ALL require similar care.

Well?? I have sometimes read of all hydrangea paniculatas being called heavenly hydrangeas as a group but I have not heard of one of them in specific called like that either. Unless it is a generic plant label. With a generic label, a mophead is sometimes called just 'hydrangea', 'blue hydrangea', etc. And maybe that is what Costco's plant wholesaler called these paniculatas.

If you post a photo, we can most likely tell you if it's in fact a panicled hydrangea rather than one of the other species. If you post a photo when it blooms, you may get an ID more specific as to cultivar.

I must have had a senior moment I don't know where I got that name from. It is called magical summer. I am including a photo of it planted two days ago and the tag.

Wonder if that is the same as "Sweet Summer"- Missouri Botanical names the cultivar 'Bokrathirteen' as call name Sweet Summer while the very same 'Bokrathirteen' at New Plants is called Magical Summer.

I have a Sweet Summer; believe mine was sold under the First Editions brand umbrella. It blooms in early July. Does quite fine. Good for medium spaces. It's already approaching 5x5' however, so once again be wary of advertised paniculata sizes.

Ah, Sweet Summer. Oh, Sweet Summer. Ughh, Sweet Sumer. I suggested a compact hydrangea to my sister and her husband bought a Sweet Summer from Lowes. Planted it in afternoon sun. Yes, you read correctly. I said 'noooo' and a month llater, they went on vacation. I stopped by to water the plants and it was a goner. It had not been transplanted. Temps had gone to the. 100s before my watering visit.... Poor thing.

So mzdee......
There are no plants for sale and no
they cannot be propagated.
Thank you for the compliment!
Basically the goal is to take back some of the
Hydrangea cut flower production that has
gone to Colombia and Guatemala.
The process to produce this flower consistently over a whole season is difficult
but we are getting better at it. We only have a few thousand plants.

There may be new hybrids coming soon
that will be for sale as landscape plants.
