HVX At My Nursery?

My closest nursery had a nice selection of hostas this year but I didn't indulge. Still had to look them over while there today and am feeling relieved that I resisted temptation in the spring.

I did tell the owner and I'm not sure he knew what I was talking about. He said he'd send some photos to his supplier to ask about it though.

I have a lot to learn so please tell me if I'm right.

All Paul's Glory looked like this and I'm pretty sure it's HVX......right?

But what about Stained Glass?

These Rain Forest Sunrise?

Its so faint I wouldn't think HVX in this Liberty, at all, but since we're on the topic.....

If you all agree any of these are HVX I'll be sure to follow up at the nursery.

    No, I wouldn't buy it, either.

    On the other side of the coin, I've had HVX infected plants that I bought locally at one of the highest end nurseries in town. When I finally figured out it wasn't cold damage and everyone on the forum said it was HVX, I tested it. It tested positive for HVX. I tossed it.

    I found that same variety infected with HVX the next year at another local nursery. I told them. It didn't really make any difference, as they continued to buy from the vendor who sold the infected plants and they had it again.

    All that to say, once you've seen it on a certain variety, you'll recognize HVX, as it doesn't look the same on all varieties. AND even though they are nice people, it doesn't mean they will change their buying habits when diseased plants are brought to their attention.

      i dont know whats going on with the first pic.. but it doesnt even look like pauls glory to me ...


      the other pix seem to show hail damage ...


      i see nothing on liberty ... except fert or water stains ...

      I can't tell for sure. However, I've done the, "Mr. Nurseryman, you have HVX" speech and had to go back and say, "Sorry, I was wrong." That was after the nursery kicked out the vendor, etc. It looked very much like the top one in your post.

      If I remember correctly, if the vein itself is the correct color and the dark stains are between the veins, it's stress, not HVX. Before I said anything, I'd ask Chris at perennialnursery.com. He has an HVX forum.

      This is the one I raised cane about. It's not HVX.

      Ken - Lol, the first one was definitely labeled Paul's Glory but I've not seen it in real life; hosta exposure is limited in this part of the country. We did have a "100 year storm" here a week and a half ago. 2 1/2 inches of rain (included some hail) in 45 min....which is CRAZY here!

      bkay - I did tell the owner I thought the Paul's Glorys (but maybe not Paul's Glorys) had HVX but told him I could be wrong, and he is going to check with his vendor contact.

      ""Sorry, I was wrong." That was after the nursery kicked out the vendor, etc."" POOR YOU! But he should have researched better before taking that step!

      I hope it isn't HVX (it's owned by a nice, hardworking couple) but hate the thoughts of having to go back to tell them I was wrong. I'll look around on Chris' forum and see what I can learn.

      That first one does look odd. Not like HVX, but odd markings. But they all look more like end-of-season uglies to me. I'm not sure where you are, but we've been really hot until a break last week with some nice rain. We didn't get hit hard like you did. But my hostas in more sun are not looking their best right now.

      editing to say maybe we're not quite at the end of the season yet, but heat stress starts mine going downhill so it feels like my hosta season is done.

      I asked on Chris' HVX forum and he also said it's not HVX. It's great to have so many people willing to connect and share their knowledge with strangers!

      I have something similar in Sept Sun this year. Been in ground for number of years, first time marking. I did get nearly faint after seeing Funky Monkey coloration.

      see link for PG ... its been decades since i saw a young one.. but the leaves just look too pointy .. young or not ... even youngins ought to have similar shape ...


      btw ... i dont care what anyone says ... i would walk right on by that plant ... lifes too short to worry about dealing with weirdos ....


      finally.. whats the deal with this seller ... why are all the plants up against the walls???
