When to move clematis

I have an area I want to redo, as silly as it sounds I want to move my clematis 4 /5 feet forward . They just wilted from the heat and are low to the ground. I was thinking I could move them now before they try to grow again, or dig them up and pot them up , or wait til fall and transplant them. They are cezanne and andromeda . What do you think ?

Hi Rebecca!! Thanks for your advice ! I know I should wait in this heat .. and I can . But I had a spark of an idea today and you know how that goes! If I had a back hoe I would have done a whole new bed ! :) haha

i was going to move these two out so I could plant kiss me Kate on the left next to the blue butterfly bush and quicksilver on the right next to the orange honeysuckle. Both large shrub / small climbers so I could put the trellis in the middle but in front if that makes sense ?

Also behind what was a very small twig of a butterfly bush (now 4by4 or more! ) is poor prince Charles that needs moved. Maybe to my teasing Georgia? Hmm .

Thanks for your input !! I'm not patient either but I'm also not into working outside in 95 degree weather so wait I shall. :)

Hi Lily!! I decided to jump over here to see if I could find any more clematis that I just had to have... Shaking my head and wondering why. I have enough ideas already!

I just moved a few clematis and planted new ones in temps in the low to high 90's the past couple of weeks and will get three more and plant them this week. I just made sure I moved as much dirt with them as possible. Dug the hole that I was moving them to first. And watered well when they were moved. Then I shaded them with garden quilt and copper pipe trellises for at least a week to 10 days. They did just fine, but they were newly planted this year and it was pretty easy to root them up. I think ideally, I would wait until spring. But I am not a patient person, so I just did it and am glad I did. I have not had experience with moving mature clematis, so maybe someone with more experience will help you out with that. Sure enjoy your posts on the Roses forum!

Oh, I hear you Lily and totally agree with you! I moved 7 roses and clematis just as the heat hit here and almost lost a rose because of it. The clematis are sulking, but doing just fine... but the difficulty in waiting, when I had an idea, was more than I could handle!

Early fall is my favorite transplant time here on the northern edge of zone 5. Warm soil is good for root growth, but less sun due to shorter days reduces plant shock. I mulch well and pay attention to water until freeze.

Thanks Babs ! Lucky the urge to rearrange everything has passed. I need to reflect and make a real plan, not just operate on whimsy. So I will spend the next month making little notes of what I really want to achieve, and go from there. Sept will be perfect for moving plants :)

rebecca are your roses recovering well ? I will have to do some too , but will wait til spring. I am horrible about spacing appropriately ! In the spring when the bed was new and plants so small , I felt the urge to fill up the bed . I planted 8 roses in a bed that 4 maybe 5 is all I need. Aghhh ! Looks good now though but won't in a year!

Lily, I do roses and shrubs and just about everything else except for fall bloomers and annuals in fall. By the time our soil has warmed up enough to be a happy place for new roots to be growing, the air temperatures are summer-time, so I have better results and have to do less watering if I use autumn as my main transplant time.
