Now I can't say I've seen a florist's gloxinia in ages....they are impressive.

Gorgeous glox! If I had the space and conditions for them, that is the type/color I would want.

Paul - if you have space for an AV - you have a space for Sinningia speciosa! Not all of them are huge.

After many years of obscurity - they are coming back - and the majority of old hybrids is lost.

It is great that Hyn carries them - and even better that she gives them as free gifts.

All of the plants that I have gotten from Hyn have been so nice and always great to get a surprise in the box.

Wow! This is amazing. I have grown AVs successfully in the past and just placed an order for a few streptocarpus from the Violet Barn. Hoping I have as good of luck with them as I did with the AVs. I need to do some research about this plant because I may need to add it to my collection if it goes well with streps.

That photo really peaked my interest in gloxinias! Just read that they have a several months period of dormancy which sounds like a bit of a pain, but if that's what it takes to get flowers like that......I guess it's worth It!

Sinningia speciosa, grrr, not Gloxinia. Gloxinia is a totally different Genus, rhizomatous, not tuberous.

Anyway - if you keep them under the lights - they go through more than one cycle of blooming. After the bloom is done and the plant slowly starts to look ratty - I remove the foliage, may be put the tip cutting for rooting, may be a leaf or 2 - they do start easily, wash the tuber, dry it and put it in a plastic bag with a barely moist vermiculite. And keep the bag somewhere where it can get light. In a month or so it will send another shoot, I pot it up - and get another blooming. It s nice to have several - preferably different varieties - you always have something growing and something sleeping.

One plant is good - more - is better.
