Accent wall or not?

I was thinking of doing an accent wall behind the bed in our bedroom, but not sure if it would look good. Here are some example pictures of the bedroom (not mine, a similar home that sold in our neighborhood)

Are accent walls still a thing?

What's with the retainer wall, does it lead into a closet? If I were to have an accent wall I'd us a different color paint around the windows. Yes it is still a thing.

You can use a bigger bed especially the modern one with wide back with a simple and modern wall paper with a picture frame above the bed
  • 9 years ago

    No here too.

Offhand I would say no, but it really would be more helpful if you posted a picture of your actual room. Depending on your colors and furniture, an accent wall might be a good idea. Photos please.

I think posting a picture of my actual room will hurt more than help :). All furniture is hand me downs, I have a huge treadmill next to the window, and an old computer desk between the bed and the treadmill (can't convince hubby to move it to the living room)...

We all have hand me down furniture and other items we don't really want in our rooms! Especially if we have a hubby! LOL! If you post a photo, someone may have an idea to make your hand me down furniture look better or better arrangements. The best colors and arrangements of what you have is the goal.

Ok, I'll post a picture when I get home, but the whole idea was to figure out if an accent wall would work with this room. I am trying to remodel the house so we can sell it in a year or two...

If you're planning to sell in less than 5 years, then you need to plan it now for being staged later. Staging definitely calls for neutral colors and no accent walls unless you have a room that is architecturally featureless and needs some kind of eye candy.

ok, got it, no accent walls. Here are the pictures, as I said this room is a mess...

The Whitened Sage that you had int your other stream would be a nice neutral for your bedroom. I see in your idea books that you really like the accent wall look. Your room is fairly large. If you really want an accent wall, that would be fine if you use a color just slightly darker than the other walls.

Sliced Cucumber above would be great for an accent wall, but is still light enough to be neutral.

Two neutrals on the walls. Paint the computer desk and dresser White/taupe grey/whitewash and new hardware for the dresser. Move computer desk to right corner. Move bed closer to window so that the treadmill can go om he closet wall. Then add a neutral rug, bedding and curtains from the ceiling. If your tv and computer are away from the bed, the room will feel more finished.

moving courtains is on the list and I plan to move the treadmill in another room. The thing about those colors is although they are pretty neither me or my husband like green. I could live with it in the kitchen because the cabinets are covering most of the walls, but in the bedroom it would be a little bit too much. And at the same time I tried some taupe colors and they are so boring....

Ok. No grey, green or taupe. That leaves blues, yellows and white. Do you like any of those? It doesn't even have to be a neutral color. We are just suggesting those because you said you will be selling your house soon.

If you found some bedding or art work you could take a color from that but it can be a beautiful I have accent walls but I'm getting tired of them I think it's more modern with all the same color
  • 9 years ago

Lots of ways to improve your room without spending too much money. Blues, corals, whites-your room is neutral enough to use any of them. Moving the treadmill will help. As suggested, paint the computer desk and put it on the same wall as the t.v. A headboard would really help the room feel finished. These headboard tiles are less than $90 at Target.

Or you can have a piece of plywood cut to the width of your bed, add batting from Joann Fabrics and a pretty, inexpensive solid fabric and hang it on the wall with a french cleat. You can make it for less than $50. Nightstands can be found on Craigslist and painted.

And to answer your original question, add another vote for no for the accent wall.

the truth is I wanted a bedroom furniture set for a while, but since we want to move we keep postponing buying it because we don't want to have a lot of stuff to move. That's why we don't have any furniture in the rest of the house except for some couches in the living room.
Anyway, color wise I love bold colors like turquoise or dark blue,or orange but I need to be practical so neutrals it is. If I go with a light green in the kitchen will that work with dark gray tile? And what other colors I could do in the rest of the house? Some taupe or warm gray in living/family/dining (it's all open space) and then what color in the baths and the bedrooms? Vanities in the bathrooms are same color as the cabinets in the kitchen, but if it's possible to do it myself I am not opposed to painting them...

I got rid of most of my furniture before I moved as well. I brought 1 sofa, a bedroom set, a few family pieces, my dining room set and that was about it. I bought everything else once I got down here. A good rule is to keep the common areas all the same color but bedrooms and bathrooms can be different. Or keep the bedrooms neutral but use your bold colors in bedding and decor.

Light green and gray can work together but it's better to post pictures to see what you're working with.

Painting wood can be tricky. In order to do it right, you're going to spend a lot of time an effort on prep and using the right paint is very important.

ok here is the house plan and a few pictures from the living area

it looks like I can upload only 4 pictures in one post, so here are the view from the stairs, view from next to the couch and view from the kitchen door

Nice open space-lots of windows. Is the taupe on the walls the color you're going to use throughout the space? Are you going to be adding furniture? My advice is to concentrate on one room at a time. Where would you like to start?

Oana- thanks for posting the pics. I've learned, on this site, that nearly nobody judges a space that's in the middle of both design and life!

Thinking of bedroom space/furniture. Sounds to me like you want a "finished" look without buying a set that's specific to that room- in case it doesn't translate to your next home. Smart.

Have you considered, perhaps, buying a bed/frame etc that you love, and then shopping consignment shops/used furniture for "finds"? I did that once, and ended up with a cohesive, yet eclectic room that was really calm and pleasing to us. Brought in some things that I painted to go with the room. Mixed a bit, on side tables. Made sure I had side lamps that tied it all together.

I'm no designer, and I'll admit to stubbing my toe more than once. WHOOPS- very wrong, for the space. But since the stuff didn't cost very much, it was easier to admit, let go and replace.

ok I just dag out the folder with paint that I got from former owners. It looks like in the living I have SW 1037 High society eggshell, family and dining is SW 1045 Different Light eggshell, Hallway is SW 1039 Zurich white eggshell. I would rather have all living area one color so I have to find something that looks ok in the darker dining.

Ok for a technical person I am very technically challenged with this app. I can't edit posts, I have no idea how to post those nice round color samples..
Anyway, here is a screenshot of some colors I saved, I was thinking one of the sage colors in the kitchen and one of the taupe/gray in the living area. Would those work? I was thinking of doing the tile and granite in the kitchen similar to this:

You did great. I know- green was the "color of the year", but I think it's classic. Let the pros ring in but I currently love Whitened Sage- soft, but not boring. Might be too bright for the room, so you can also try Simply Sage. You will, however, want to get big boards (paint stores have them) to test. See what it looks like with the existing features in the room- woods, rock etc.

Also remember- if you find a color you love, nearly any paint store can advise you if you say "great, but a bit too (fill in the blank- yellow? dark? etc). Then they can either advise a different color, in the same family, or if really good- custom mix, writing down the formula for future use, and sell you a quart. Spending a tiny bit to find your bliss is a great investment.

I already selected some paint canvases on Amazon and I have to get the paint samples and test how they look. The canvases are less than a dollar, do the paint stores have them cheaper?

I found this palette on Google when searching for sage palette. I am totally anti artistic, so I am not sure if the dark blue actually works with the rest. I thought I could do the light sage in the kitchen, the gray sage in the second bedroom, the warm gray in the living area, and a darker warm gray in the second bath, and light blue in the master bedroom and dark blue in the master bath...

That should be fine. Navy, green and gray all work well together. That sage green might read a little bright-more like a spring green. You might take a look at SW Clary Sage

or Baby Bok Choy if you want something a little brighter

Yeah, I will have to take samples of a few sage colors and see which works best. Ordered the canvases and probably on Wednesday I'll buy the samples, hopefully I am not too lazy in the weekend to paint them and take some photos...

It's all about the lighting in your house. Some may go too gray, some may be too bright. It took me five tries to get my bedroom color right.
