Yes, fires do amazing things to a sunset. Living in Southern California, we've had our share over the years.

Yes. Smoke in the air that you can not only see but smell. Ashes drifting down and settling on cars, plants, etc. They can drift quite a ways away. Even if you aren't really in the path of the fire, you can still be affected. Sometimes the ash can carry small embers and start more fires when the finally alight. With all the rain we had this winter there will be plenty of dry grass and brush. There are already several fires burning in California. "Fire Season" doesn't been officially start until October. And you still see fools who through their burning cigarette butts out of their car windows.

For reference, the island I live on is less than 3 miles at its widest, and 27 miles long. It's really just a thin sandbar that they raised a bit on the East end.

I feel you. We had bad fires very close to us a lot last year during our drought. Just a bit north of me it took out Gatlinburg, TN and a lot more. We had tons of smoke - and a few years ago we had bad fires before that too, down in south Georgia. You're right though, those are some fantastic photographs! Beautiful.
