Reverse Osmosis system?

Please help! In our old house, we had a Kitchenaid fridge with a water filter. Worked great! We've moved, and my current fridge doesn't have it. I don't like the Brita filtered water (tasted gross!) Culligan will be installing a water softener and chlorine removal system...they are also trying to sell me on reverse osmosis under the kitchen sink? (Renting it, since we will be redoing the kitchen likely in one or two years). Any thoughts on the under-sink reverse osmosis system? Apparently it has it's own sprayer. Anything else better? I'm not getting a new fridge yet and the Brita is a fail. Thanks so much!

Thanks. Lots of old comments. Would like to know in 2017 what people's experiences are, or if there are other options? I'm not sure I want to strip the water of the good minerals with RO?

I got a reverse osmosis system from Culligan about a year ago and it was WELL worth the money. I can tell a noticeable difference in the water to the point where when I drink bottled water or water in a restaurant it tastes really off. Right now we are renovating our kitchen and don't have access to our RO system and I am REALLY missing it. Yes, you aren't getting a few "good minerals" with the RO system, but it's definitely worth it to avoid the myriad contaminants in today's water supply.

Had a reverse osmosis system for 26 years, in the home we moved from this past October. That one was from a local Long Island company.

In the new kitchen, in the renovated "new" house, we bought the RO system from Costco. Very reasonable price. The installer was terrific. During his first visit, he showed us a selection of RO faucets. I selected a model that matches the Kohler Artifacts main faucet, sitting next to it. Makes delicious water.

In both instances, we had the RO system installed in the basement ceiling. This way, I didn't have to give up any storage space, under the sink.

Please consider the environmental impact of a reverse osmosis system before buying one. I haven't looked into it recently but my understanding is that the amount of water wasted is many times the amount of water produced. If that is still the case this is irresponsibly wasteful. Drinking water is a precious resource which is in very rapid decline. There are plenty of ways to get clean, filtered water that aren't wasteful.

We had an RO at our first house with the unit in the basement. A word of caution, I warned to use for coffee making but the plumber told us hot to. The water is so pure that it can be corrosive and harmful to the coffee maker.
