you are going to be doing a lot of tiptoe-ing around without a door to close. i think the curtain across is as good a solution as a folding screen. you can use the plastic cups used in closets to hold a wooden rod for the ends, a couple screw holes to fill when you move out.

I love small space dilemmas! What are the dimensions of the space? Can you post pics of the space? My first thought would be to use functional storage for the wall but not sure if you have enough space.

If the room is there do bookcases ( you will probably have to finish the back )... you can face them either direction - they can buffer some sound and gives you tons of extra storage...
