It's been a hot and dry summer here so far this year. I suppose it's making up for the long cold winter we had!

Most perennials are done for me now, I'm most relying on annuals for colour. Satisfying to see them bloom after starting them from seed indoors many months ago.

The blooms on 'Garland Orange' marigolds are much larger and fuller than I expected! Great height on these, they are very vibrant orange:

Tried a bunch of cosmos this year. Below, 'Double Click', 'Xanthos' and 'Rubenza'. The blooms on 'Xanthos' are smaller than expected, I don't think I will buy these again. 'Rubenza' is EXCELLENT, large ruby red flowers which fade to dusty red, very prolific (even in part sun) and not too tall, not too short, they are about the same height as the 'Garland Orange' marigolds. I might plant Rubenza every year!

Some perrenials still going, here is gaillardia 'Torchlight'. Tall stems, about 2 feet high for me in full sun.

Wow, your flowers were great in August.

How do you keep your roses from Japanese beetles? They eat just about eveything of my roses. what do you spray?

I had missed seeing this thread when you originally posted it. I also grow 'Garland Orange' marigolds, these are awesome large blooming machines, though it's a good ideal to give them some support or branches can sometimes break off and I've even had entire plants topple under their own weight. I'll need to try out some of those great looking cosmos varieties you're growing!

Kay, we don't yet have Japanese beetles in this part of Canada, though I imagine it's only a matter of time!

Thanks, Twros for your reply. Japanese beetles eat canna leaves, roses, hollyhocks, what not here.

Thank you Kay, I did not realize how lucky I am to not have Japanese beetles here. Perhaps that's the one benefit of the cold winter lol.

Twors, good to hear from you, yes I was very inspired by photos of your marigolds from before! I think 'Garland Orange' will become a yearly addition, the blooms are very long lasting and are still holding onto their orange today. Plus the taller height really makes them stand out. Most of the cosmos are still blooming, but sadly the variety 'Daydeam' is just starting!

A few things are still blooming now we are in mid September, below are some pictures from today.

Hydrangeas 'Limelight' and 'Little Lamb' here:

Not pictured is hydrangea 'Fire Light'. It hasn't gotten the brighter red colour I was hoping for, but the bush shape is nicer and less floppy. I'll give it some more time.

Newly planted this year, anthemis tinctoria 'Charme', this has been a blooming machine for months now. I bought it at Superstore and hope it makes it through the winter! Sedum 'Autumn Joy' and 'Garland Orange' marigolds in the background:

And this is not really a flower, but it looks great in the flower beds - artichoke, not sure what variety:

The geraniums got brought inside last night due to the frost warning. I think I have too many!

And of course, many roses are still going. I haven't been able to do much in the garden lately, so it was nice to have the energy get a few photos before winter shows up. I'll have to give credit to my husband for taking care of everything lol!

After the frost last night, it certainly feels like fall. However last year I remember there being a few 20+C days in November! We'll see...

Here is an informative site on the spread of Japanese Beetles, if I ever move I might have to take this into consideration, I saw pictures online, what horrible damage they do! http://www.inspection.gc.ca/plants/plant-pests-invasive-species/directives/horticulture/d-96-15/appendix-1/eng/1346826626609/1346826990603

What are still blooming for me now are Prairie Sun Rudbeckia and Bubble Gum Petunia

    Prairie,

I have been interested in Geranium 'Rozanne'. Where did you get them? Can they be started from seeds? Where did you buy your seeds for marigold?

    Prairie,

Out of the two Hydrangeas you posted, what is the name of the one on the top left? Limelight? My annabelle didn't bloom last year and this year it was bearly alive. I guess I need replace it with something else.

Hi Brandon, I really like your Prairie Sun rudbeckia, glad it does well for you, I was thinking of giving it a try next year. Does it grow as a perennial or annual for you? Does it self seed?

Your Bubblegum petunia looks great, it's definitely become a yearly staple for me.

I got geranium 'Rozanne' from a Superstore, although I've seen it available at most garden nurseries too. It does not set seed and is a blooming machine. 'Garland Orange' marigolds seeds came from Stokes Seeds online, and yes the top left hydrangea in the last photo is 'Limelight'.

I almost killed a few hydrangeas this year because I forgot to water them in the heatwave. Limelight, Little Lamb and Quick Fire have done the best for me so far. I have some other types but will see how they do next year.

Prairie Sun grow as annual for me but they bloom pretty much all summer. Thanks for the info.

That 'Turbo' rose of yours continues to impress me! I've grown the 'Double Click' cosmos before and now must try 'Xanthos' and 'Rubenza', your photos look awesome! That artichoke sure is striking, I wonder can you save it over the winter? The cold and wet have made a mess of some of my plants and so I've begun to do clean up and yarding stuff off to the compost pile, only wish summer would last longer in these parts, at least we have a week of good weather ahead it appears.
