Question from California re Foothill Palo Verde

I'm looking into the Palo Verde tree and it seems the Foothill is the smaller variety. I'm in coastal Northern California in Zone 9b/Sunset 14. I have clay soil and our summers are not that hot but getting hotter. This year we've had roughly 30 days where we have hit 82-84 F. Would the foothill palo verde (Parkinsonia microphylla) do well in my area? Is the smallest variety of the palo verde the foothill Palo Verde that grows 10-20 ft high and 10-20 wide?

I am very intrigued by this tree. I understand that you can eat the pods like edamame and the flowers can be eaten in salads?

It might do well there.

I understand that you can eat the pods like edamame and the flowers can be eaten in salads ... I would consider the pods to be a survival food. Yes, they are not toxic and have food value if you are lost in the desert in bean season, but they are stringy and tough. The beans, if extremely unripe, aren't bad eating as a snack while hiking.

I've never thought of using the flowers as salad decor, have no clue how they taste.

lazy_gardens Oh that is good to know! I think I mix up pod with beans. I imagine the pods are quite leathery.

I'd be surprised if it does well. You'll need plenty of sunlight for the foothills PV. Pods and flowers won't come for several years.
