Table covering suggestions

My dining room table is a dark brown Italian Cattalan table- 45 x 98 in. Very modern. I am looking for options other than a tablecloth to cover it when entertaining. I want to protect the wood. If I use placemats I would likely need 4 across.- probably over 20 for the whole table. I was thinking of using table runners- and run them across the width of the table instead of down the middle.

It is also very challenging finding anything modern and interesting in the way of placemats which also protect- most of the Chilewhich have holes. All and any suggestions are welcome.

You could also get a rectangular glass piece cut to size and leave it on the top of the table all of the time. You'll protect, yet see, the wood.

This is unconventional but could look pretty. 100 percent cotton carpet runner. If it's not too thick.

Thanks for all your suggestions. This is an interesting idea but am afraid not wide enough. My table is 45" wide. I wonder if its worth exploring having larger sized placemats made- but then I would want to be able to wash them on a regular basis- not sure if there is the right fabric available...

Go to a fabric store and pick out a pattern you love. That way you can measure the length and width you want and a pattern you love. You may even look at upholstery material. If you don't sew, you can take it to your dry cleaners and ask them to hem the edges for you. They probably will do it for a reasonable price because it's easy peasy. Easier than altering.
