Which drain to order?

9 years ago
last modified: 9 years ago

I have ordered this sink.

http://www.us.kohler.com/us/Undertone-31-1-2-x-20-7-8-x-9-1-2-under-mount-large-medium-double-bowl-kitchen-sink/productDetail/kitchen-sinks/422342.htm?skuId=387991&brandId=empty&;

Underneath that sink on the website, there are FIVE drain assemblies that appear to be "compatible". How on earth am I supposed to know which one to order? I will have a disposal on the right. Guess I have only ordered had sinks that came with all this stuff before. Crazy that you have to figure this out yourself. And then they have about 10 different finishes. Holy crap. I would assume...it's a stainless sink, so polished stainless? And do I need two of these?

    Are you going to buy a disposal?

    Thank GOD!

    Now that I've expressed my joy at the fact that you've ordered a sink, I'll go read the rest of your question.

    HAHAHA!

    eam44, I will be using my existing disposal - plumber will hook up to the new sink.

    I contacted the supplier where I bought the sink and they let me know what was needed. Just one sink drain assembly (unless I wanted to use my old one, and I don't) and if I wanted a different disposal flange, then that too.

    Well, you need one strainer for the left side, and one disposer flange for the right side. You don't HAVE to purchase these things from Kohler...but, you can. Something to keep in mind: a disposer flange will come with your disposer, but if you're wanting it in the same special finish that matches your Kohler strainer (if you've bought one), then you'd buy a Kohler disposal flange.

    The differences between the strainers have to do with whether or not they come with an integrated tailpiece (y/n); construction (brass vs steel); finish (chrome, brass, etc.)

    Get a new fancy flange to go with your new fancy sink and strainer.

    Yup. I like shine, so getting new for both. Both in chrome. :-) And from what I have read, the Kohler drains are tons better, quality-wise, than any other brand.

    I have drain envy now. :-/ The chrome plating is wearing off my sink strainer (or drain or whatever it's called) and the neoprene stopper part of the basket strainer is drying out. (On the bright side, at least there's brass underneath the chrome!)

    Yeah the disposal stopper/flange that I have, sucks. I had to get a new rubber piece (that part that is in the drain) because the old one just plumb came out one day) from Insinkerator, and the replacement stopper has never ever fit right.
