Growth question - Emerald Queen

last modified: 9 years ago

This is my Emerald Queen in my back yard. Roots are fully established after one year so it's officially there to stay haha.

My question is, is the first "scaffold branch" from the bottom supposed to/is it not good that it has grown taller than the central leader? I know these are decurrent trees but in a pruning guideline someone here had referenced me to it said that maples should have one central leader until 2/3 of the trees mature height. This tree is about 14ft tall overall right now with a mature height of around 50ft from what I've read. (Zone 4, western WI)

Should i leave that first scaffold branch there or does it need to be pruned during the appropriate time of year? Thanks!
