Most bathrooms have a central lighting source and vanity lighting. If you would like to minimize the profile of your central fixture, consider using recessed can lighting in the ceiling accompanied by vanity lighting. This should give you plenty of light in the bathroom and at the vanity mirror(s).

It's a good idea to run your lighting plans by an electrician prior to installing. A good electrician will be able to advise you on whether you will have enough, too little or too much light based on the fixtures you are considering.

Yes that is what I've seen while searching Houzz photos. However my husband doesn't want both. He argues that the bathroom is on the smaller side so one thing would look good. We do have a recess light in the shower though...

If you are choosing one or the other, I would recommend going with the vanity lighting. In front of the mirror is where you will need the most light. If your bathroom is small enough, this could be enough light for the room, especially if you already have recessed lighting in the shower.

The reason why vanity lighting is so important is that an overhead light placed centrally in a room will put your face in shadow facing the mirror (The light will be behind you). How can you make up, put eye drops in or put in contacts without clear light? The results of all will be less than perfect.

However, you could put two recessed lights above the vanity and in a small bathroom that should do double duty for the whole room.

Ask your husband to try putting on some make up with just the central chandelier. :)
