Unlaquered brass

Does anyone here know how or if unlaquered brass will hold up in a shower? I have the old lacquered bright brass Moen knobs and trim pieces and they can't be changed without ripping out walls and replacing the valves. I read where soaking brass in acetone will remove the lacquer and allow the brass to patina out after a while. I could remove the trim pieces and do that but don't know how feasible this would be in a shower. Thoughts anyone?

It will tarnish and accumulate hard white deposits of various types. It will be impossible to clean. It will look neglected. It will look like you could not afford to replace it.

Have you double checked with Moen on trim plate and valve replacements? Often a Moen shower valve can be swapped out for a new one without destroying any tile.

Upon closer inspection, it is a Kohler system. The trim is available in a brushed brass, but the lady at the local Kohler bath showroom said the valves for this model have been changed twice in the last 10 years. She is the one who told me it would be hard to change the valve; not just a matter of taking the face off and replacing it. Think I should ask a plumber?

Take the trim off and take photos of the current valve (and handle and trim) to show at the Kohler showroom. Then hire a very good local plumber who carries Kohler products.

what is on the other side of that wall? Often the showers back up to a closet where you could cut through from the other side to replace the valves easily...
