ok, i am torn, normallly i say ignore the fp it is not like you can change it all the time. but once you have pointed it out. the rug seem a little too yellow. but you can just ignore.

I don't think it is the color. The rug seems way too small for this area. It should be about one foot from the tv console and the front legs of the accent chairs should be sitting on it as well as the couch.

To busy and to small, get lighter colour.

Turn it so the dark side is out.

Meant add, move it out from the legs of the sofa.

Yes, try turning around the rug..Chairs are small for size of sectional. Art will help bring the room together more as well.

To me it looks like you need to move both the sectional sofa and the rug forward - get them away from the wall. Then the rug would be more centered in the room. It looks like you have plenty of room to move the sofa from against the wall.

I agree with the other suggestions. You also need lamps so that you can turn off that very harsh overhead lighting.

A couple of blue vases on top of the fireplace mantel would help tie the rug and fireplace together.

I would centre the carpet in front of the fireplace and move the sofa so the legs are on the carpet.
I would have painted the walls a cream or a shade of the yellow that is in the carpet.
Also move the chairs away from the front of the fireplace , move them beside the TV..

I like the rug with the furniture. What I would do is change the fireplace. The fireplace would look great with the brick painted white and or replace brick with white tile in a herringbone design. The other thing that might help bring the look together would be to change the mantel to a more sleek design.

The real problem is that the rug isn't big enough.

It helped that grover moved the very contrasting black chairs forward. Seen against white and tan fireplace to me it seemed harsh, and also detracted from softer rug colors...

Again, to bring a bit more attention to rug, I'd remove the dark grey pillows in the chairs....

Would it be so bad to try the chairs on each side of the tv unit? even a bit forward.

Though small-ish, I'd rather see the blue brought out -

As it now is, seems to be 'ignoring' the rug just a bit.... ???

see with time, you won't notice that fp at all. lol would like some pillows to pull those colors up?

These are all great ideas and things to consider. Thank you to everyone for the advice. I am going to try rearranging the rug and turning the rug to the darker side. Then, I can compare the two and see which side looks better. @Groveraxle, your pictures have really helped me see how I can make the rug and the fireplace go together. @everdebz, I thought about bringing out the blue in the rug with pillows on the sectional but I don't want the room to look too busy.

Agree with the suggestion to turn the rug the other direction -- between sofa and tv w/longer side parallel to the wall with the fireplace.

Consider vertical blinds for both the window and the door on each side of the fireplace: wood, faux wood, fabric or different colors of vinyl are available.
