You will probably want to have a least a few area rugs for comfort and to define different spaces. That will mitigate the brown-on-brown effect of wood furniture. Since that seems to be a sticking point for you and your boyfriend, I would probably look at rugs before I looked at anything else. If you look at your last inspiration pic, it has lots of brown furniture, but it doesn't come off as brown-on-brown because of the gray rug. A rug can also guide your color choices for the rest of the room.

The other trick to pairing wood furniture with wood floors is to avoid furniture that is the same color as the floor. Lighter, darker, redder grayer--there are many wood species and many wood stains, so wood on wood doesn't have to mean matchy.
