Well, first you can decide if you are going to grow your potatoes in a large container, a grow bag or in a dug up section in your yard. You are late for potatoes this year, so next Spring you will be all prepared. You can get your seed potatoes at your local garden center or purchase on line. Do not use potatoes purchased at the grocery store. They are treated with sprout prohibitive. You may get potatoes, but not nearly the amount from seed potatoes. Cut up your seeds into chunks with at least one sprout on it, preferably two. Place in your soil and cover with at least 3" of soil. When the plants are at least 6" high, cover or hill up with additional soil. I do this at least 3 times during the growing season. Don't forget to water the plants. Harvest when plants dry out and die off. I grab the dried top and start pulling away the soil. Harvest the potatoes. Some will be attached, some will be in the soil. Some people use a pitchfork to dig under the plants to harvest. I have stabbed to many potatoes doing this so I just pull back the soil and thoroughly search the soil with my hands. I don't wash my potatoes until I am ready to use them. Just brush off the dirt and let them sit on a rack for a few days and then store them in a cool place (we put ours down cellar) . HTH
