Rainy day variety typing project

last modified: 9 years ago

So--I know I've said official names don't matter to me, but it's indeed addictive to collect them anyway. This is just a list of guesses I have for some of my varieties.

Most of my violets haven't bloomed in a looong time, so most of these are old and were taken with a digital polaroid from 2009. Sorry for blurriness... I'd wait for new blooms, but it's a few weeks off at the least for most and I'm impatient!

#1: I think this one might be in the Glacier family (variety #283). It's my icon on here. It's always been a biiiiiig plant--10 inch diameter at its smallest, and just over 12 inches at its biggest. Its leaves tend to angle upwards. Not red-reverse.

#2: I named this one Louise after the character in Bob's Burgers, cause it started out as a little bunny ear sucker. Just a medium standard I think--largest size 10 inches. Might be an Akira (#69), a Delaware (#72), or a Sherrie (#193). The blooms are a few shades darker than the photo. Red reverse leaves.

#3: This is the first-ever violet I bought, Achilles. It hasn't bloomed since I got it--it's survived my worst mistakes--but it and its leaf-made copy are finally throwing up bloom stalks this month. It's a semi-mini, and I believe it's an Alrun (variety #23, previously #18, also known as Flori, Kentucky, and Rhapsodie in Blue). I distinctly remember its blooms being deep purple single layer. Red reverse leaves.

#4: Annnnd finally, our grand finale that I've already typed, the lovely Dali. The first copy of this plant--I gave it TLC-caused crown rot, and will never grant self-forgiveness...

BUT here's a current photo of the sucker it had!

You can just make out its first blooms. I'm so excited for this one.

Anyway, hope this is a fun rainy day project to observe?? It's so dark outside!

Lovely, lovely plants, Marina - beautifully grown.

Oh, ho, Dviolet1 - I recently unearthed a digital photo frame I received as a gift years ago. NOW I know what to do with it, LOL! Thanks for the idea.

Its always fun when a little bitty sucker of ours becomes a grown beautiful plant. Almost like being a parent of some sort. A similar, albeit much lesser feeling of accomplishment.

    Nice pics of nice plants.

Thanks everybody!! I'm very happy with how my plants are doing this year. :o)

@Heather: I know the feeling! Like I messaged, Delaware is only one of about five possible names for it. I live right outside Philly, so I'm hoping it's either that or a Pennsylvania.

hmm i love PA's too..hmm now i dont know..now looking at flower type..i dont think mine is frilled...see i always think it looks like one except for one thing is off..but its usually something else..i'm going to be upset if mine isnt delaware beings i put it in a special pot lol

State names for plants, hmm, I got one I call Florida.

It's got a wacky shape and I can just make out the panhandle and peninsula when I turn my head just so...

Optimara had an entire series of States!!!!! And YES !!!! I do see the little buds coming!!!!! Rosie

They totally did! And I bet Rosie has every single one on her list. :o) I haven't looked through the collection in a while, but Florida is really beautiful.

If you find it blooming maybe you can post it. Now I see a 50 state road trip is in order!

Oh I am sooooooo busted. Rosie

I remember that Optimara Arkansas was a nice red. Wonder how I remember that (lol)?

It's easy for me to remember. Here's a newer "Arkansas" plant recently obtained fm Selective Gardener.

Those bloom colors and shapes are VERY similar. My old dumb camera didn't capture the depth of the color--but that pic is accurate. (It's such a favorite color of mine.) Is that version of Arkansas a medium standard?

While this is a fairly young plant, I have had "Arkansas" before, as a NOID. Picked it up from Lowes or Home Depot. It is definitely a "standard" and from what I recall of my older mature plant, probably "medium" in normally trimmed form.

I have been slowly but surely gifting all my NOID's except for the few that I have grown attached to. The Arkansas was one of my so-called reds that I really liked so the last time I placed an order w the SG, I put it on the order.

I have been trying to find the fine line where I can keep some of my larger "standards" trimmed back to where they look nice but don't take up a dinner plate sized spot under the lights. This "Arkansas" is one of those plants. Hopefully careful trimming of the roots and leaves w leave me w a slightly smaller example. We'll see!

Thanks Jeff, I like my native state and need to find one maybe one of these days.

Oh, now I'm REALLY curious what "Oregon" and "Tennessee" look like. Hmmm...

Thanks x2 Jeff! Louise is about a week or two from blooming, so pictures will be coming. :o)

Edit: Finally got pictures of the Dali! It bloomed true a few days ago, yay!!!

Double YAY!!!! Good for you!!!!! Rosie

Today's the day!! Louise finally opened up enough for me to take pictures. The blooms are a little richer than these photos, but these are nonetheless much better than the one in my original post. Louise's blooms are closer to the color of Jeff's Arkansas.

Usually the tips of the blooms don't curl, they look like the topmost petals instead, but it just opened a day ago. Thoughts on what it might be?

No, but that is a beautiful rosette!!!! And flower also!!!! Rosie

hmm mine doesnt look like that..the leaves are very very dark. flower is similar ...i'm not exactly sure if they call it purple..or purple red..or red with a slight purple ting..

This one def doesn't have any purple or violet tones as far as I can tell. It's this really rich garnet-raspberry color.
