Nice! How tall is the avocado?

Makes me wonder if the avocado or the pom bear fruits in container or even how to overwinter them?

Avocados are fierce competitors for food and water; and thus create a quite large root system. I have a pomegranate grown from seed that is 2 years old and has not yet made a flower.

Johnmerr, before you put to much labor in your pomegranate, know that pomegranates can be grown from root suckers, layering, budding or grafting. They also grow easily from seed, but the resulting shrub or tree is always ALWAYS of inferior quality.

Will pomegranates have fruits if grown in container? Looks like Avocado is nothing more then beautiful ornamental and not what I need.

In my case the neighbor's tree, grown from seed and from which I got my seed, produces a mountain of beautiful fruit every year; but of course it is planted in the ground. It costs me very little to maintain mine in a large container; and time will tell if it fruits. I may move it to another place and plant it in the ground before we know if it fruits in a container.

Sunshine the cado is about 3-3.5ft. It has a lot of growing to do.

John i chose reed for its compact and upright growth behavior. I tried the fruit last june and liked it much better than hass. I couldn't find too much info on root system for reeds. I think it wasn't as spreading as other varieties. I have the corner of the yard behind the pom reserved for the cado. It's a big empty space for now. I need to find more info on the sharwill's as that's my 2nd choice.

Susanne cados can be tricky to fruit even planted in the ground. I need a tall evergreen to block out traffic noise. There is a street behind the house that is getting busier with all the new housing being built. Tasty fruit would be a bonus. You may have some success with poms. I think sunshine (or someone in Canada) has several poms in pots. It was in the August thread.

I don't know much about avocados; although in Guatemala we have over 100 varieties. The only one I grow is the world's best, the Queen. I would not have a hass in my garden or in my house; although it is the best known and most traded in the world, IMO it is one of the worst.

Johnmerr, can you tell what varieties of avocados are creamy, have consistency of butter when ripe, not sweet tasting and not kind of watery? The reason I am asking is, I got an avocado fruit from Asian store (produce of Brazil). Very large in size, green peel and I didn't like the taste, kind of watery and sweet. I don't know what was the variety, it was only labeled as "Green avocado". I have seedling avocados and want to graft the best tasting avocado variety on them.

Sunshine I think the Hass is very big and watery. I don't like that one. Do you think you can get avocado tree to get fruit in your climate?

I once met a man in Guatemala, who had more than 100 varieties. I asked him his favorite and he said "unquestionably, the Queen" That was 40 years ago; but it is the reason I grow the Queen today; it was created in Antigua, Guatemala and that is where I grow it.

Susanne, the Hass that we get from our grocery store is creamy and smaller and I like the fruit. One can always try to do things that are "impossible" sometimes ;))

Johnmerr, is the Queen avocado creamy and how does it compare to Hass in size and taste?

I planted a dwarf avocado (from god's little acre, and I think it was $39.00 for a 4 foot tall in a 5 gallon pot, Junk). Was the owner there when you visited? He is the only one who cares about customer service and with some knowledge. I think after he got wheelchair bound, they started getting their trees from other growers.) I know it is going to be a challenge to get fruits, but a lot of trees in my neighborhood have fruiting avocados, so we will see!

The Queen is double the size of the Hass; and it has the most velvety/buttery flavor. Check out avocado contests in the US and you will see that more often than not, the Queen is the winner.

Junk4us, I don't have fruitbearing poms, only have seedlings in containers, it is Jinnylea who has different varieties of fruiting poms(see the August post).

Sunshine I knew it was someone with Poms in the august thread. Mine is a sweet, not ever sweet. Not sure what the difference is. Both have the same description.

I think I will return the avocado tree. From what i read, it has root rot and it's difficult to recover from that. I will try to visit laguna nursery in SoCal next week.

The avocado growers forum is not that active, I noticed.

I wish the other forums were as active as the citrus forum. I often want to branch out into growing other things and head over to their specific forums only to find that they hardly get any activity. I'd love to figure out if I could grow a potted avocado or five up in 8a but everything I've come across doesn't make it look feasible. But for now i'm moving into growing figs, their forum isn't as trafficked as the citrus one but its still got decent activity.

My figs are not ripening, because of the cold weather :( Last winter my Negronne fig didn't go dormant and we picked 6 ripe figs in March indoors :)

That's awesome Sunshine! What varieties do you grow? The hardest part for me is choosing which ones to get. I like darker colored figs because they are usually juicier than the greens I've come across but I really just want anything sweet and juicy no matter the color. I'd love recommendations from people who grow them. :)

Sammers, I have Desert King, Negronne, Hardy Chicago and Lattarulla. The Negronne is my most prolific fig in terms of growth and fruit production, it has purple fruit. My Desert King has not fruited so far in 2,5 years (from cutting). The Hardy Chicago and Lattarulla have unripe fruit on them as well. I removed any fruit that was the size of a marble or smaller a week ago, so the rest of the fruit could ripen, we are already in September. You could check on YouTube the taste comparisons that people do on their home grown fig fruit.

I am glad to hear the Negronne is a good producer! it was at the top of my list.

I only have Celeste, little miss figgy (because of the name) brown turkey and hardy chicago. I just started this year with tiny cuttings and not sure if this will work. But love the taste of figs so we will see :)

I finally returned the sad cado. It had some new growth that looked nice. I kept it in shade. Found out that it was supposed to be marked 50% off but I was charged full price. The guy said the blackish branches was due to sun burn. I didn't see any evidence of sun burn on the leaves. But that could explain why the sad cado looked anorexic. Laguna Hills nursery offered me an immediate discount because it wasn't a full 15g size yet (recently potted up). Even though Laguna nusery is 400+ miles away, I will buy my next 'cado from them.

Junk4us, it's good to know that you were able to return that avocado tree. Could you post a picture of your Reed in sunshine, I love seeing pictures of trees bathing in the sun:))

sunshine I haven't had time to plant it yet. I will take some pics soon. I've kept it in the shade during the 2 weeks of heatwave we had. I just pulled it out since it's getting cooler.
