T Budding - Roses, Fruit, Nut, Flowering & Shade Trees

T Budding is the way cultivars of these woodies are propagated. This work is carried out in the Dog Days of summer, this is the time of year when the bark of both understock and scion "slips" or seperates easily. Understock is usually seedlings which were lined out in the field by the thousands 3 or 4 months prior. Budsticks of the desirable cultivar is taken from current season wood. Leaves are removed but leave petiole. Wrapping strips vary from one place to the next. Here is budding knife, spent budstick with buds removed and whet stone.

Make the cut in the understock with the knife, turn the knife over and lift the bark with the knife.
Slip the prepared bud into the understock.
Wrap with budding strip.The petiole will fall off then the bud has knitted.
