Too late to prune ?

I have a couple jubilation gardenias that were in a shady spot, they turned very leggy. I moved them this May and they are growing back on the tips, but now they are very very leggy. I know they get their buds in fall, but i wanted to test this spot out to see if they would grow at all first. I am going to prune 2 of them to see if they will bush out again.. Is it too late in the year to do that ?
