Go to TX forum and ask. I live in Houston area and grow Cathedral Windows a sport of Stained Glass. Also grow Stained Glass, a sport of Guacamole. I'm growing in amended soil, part shade, moist. This year was good b/c not as much humidity as usual, which they don't like. I would not conjure dreams of hosta beds like you see in NE. It is frustrating b/c local nurseries, big box and specialty, grow and sell a lot more varieties with iffy future in our weather, afa I'm concerned. I've spent oodles of $ on hostas and very little to show for it. Go to TX forum.

PS: don't hold your breath on heuchera or heucherellas, either. They are sold here, clueless as to why.

Are you talking about zone 6 Texas or zone 10 Texas? There is a huge difference between the extremes in the state.

Looks like Houston is 9A. Like the poster above from Houston stated, you will likely be limited to Plantaginea descendants and the most heat tolerant hostas.

It depends on where in Texas you're talking about. Your best chances of growing hosta are in Northeast Texas. East of Dallas, it's cooler, wetter and they have acid soil and water, which hosta love.

There is no comparison in what varieties of hosta you can grow in Ohio and Texas. You are much more limited on varieties that will do well here. They don't get as big here as they do in Ohio. We also have a much longer growing season, so hosta get ugly before they die back.

So, a lot depends on where you are, how much you love the hosta and how much effort you are willing to put into them. If you are coming to DFW, I'll be glad to share what I've learned.

Bkay knows her stuff here on the forum! I live in 9b, but we don't ever get as hot as you do in TX during the summer. I have very few fragrants. The 9b refers to the coldest temps. Try some and see what you get...if they last over 3 years you are doing something very, very well, and need to report here.

Hi, I am a little south of DFW. I grow mine in pots. I have had most of them ten years or more. I have been busy lately, and my garden is pretty much on its own for now, but the reservoir system I use has worked for some bad drought years. I need to do an update on the system. Good luck, you won't know until you try.
