Westland Apple

I know this variety has fallen out of favor because to most tastes, it is a bit too astringent for eating fresh. But if you like applesauce, it's well worth a look. The tree is cold hardy, bears large fruit and is very productive in my location. My tree is only about 11 feet tall, and this year, has already given me its best-ever bounty -- well over 60 gallons (more than 200 pounds) of apples! That's just what I've brought in; there are at least 20 more gallons still on the tree!

In the opinion of my family, out of all the apples we've fruited here (including Goodland, Zestar, Carroll, Hazen, Mantet, Parkland, Prairie Magic, Hardy McIntosh, Noret, Kerr, and Chestnut), Westland makes the best sauce. If you, like us, prefer your applesauce with some "zing" to it, you might want to try it.
