Hi Everyone --

When I first started clearing out this area, I envisioned much easier digging and ultimately planting of various succulents. What I've found beneath the surface seems daunting (to a beginner at least).

The area is approximately 30" from wall to pavers and roughly 20 from left to right. I apologize for the pictures that don't truly show the scale.

The ground beneath is full of roots from what I presume to be old plants. Also, it seems a water line system runs to a sprinkler head/out every 4 feet. This actually seems fine as I want to retrofit the tops to a drip system.

My questions:

Will I run into issues with new plants and this native soil given the amount of old roots?

Can I safely plant small to medium succulents given the nearby water line system?

Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be greatly appreciated..
