Fireplace makeover

I'd like to cover brick in polished tile, paint firebox brass to black and add shelves to side area....and keep that tv....cuz someone likes it there even if I don't...compromise. Thoughts..

If the t v is staying there…or I should say the t v is staying there, at least for now, I wouldn’t spend $$ on tile. I would stain or paint (ask your local paint store’s opinion) the bricks black. T V will almost disappear…not as much as you would want, like moving it to another room, but it will be less noticeable

I like most. I like the one in which the bottom portion of the fireplaces ledge extends all the way across the wall. It elongates it and the the shelves rise from that ledge. Looking forward to more opinions. Thank you!

I agree that you should hold off on tiling the fireplace and paint the brick instead. I painted my brick fireplace surround a cream color and spray-painted the brass fireplace screen a dark charcoal grey. What a difference it made in the room! Using cream will not minimize the TV, of course (as per JudyG's genius suggestion) , but painting the brick will make a huge difference whichever direction you decide to go.

We have shelves on both sides of our fireplace. Our TV is mounted in the shelves. Makes the fireplace the focal point and not the TV.

Love that sliding cover Irene. I really want to have a sleek tile look rather than the painted brick though.....it's tough...

I'm sorry, but there is nothing--not a sliding cover nor a tile refacing--that will make a TV hanging at the ceiling look acceptable.

I just noticed the duct tape holding the cables against the brick. That will be even more noticeable with a tile fireplace. You need to have a serious discussion with the one who likes this look and see if there's another place to compromise.

Yah, like to either side. What is that big marble slab (??) doing in the corner? The TV would look great on a console there instead, and the components could get off the hearth and into shelves designed for them...

Ask Mr. Compromise if he doesn't think this is a better look. It will also save his neck.

I actually think your brick is quite attractive, so I would not reface it, but I would get rid of all the florals and stuff that detract from the brick. And what to do with the brick if you really hate it is a dilemma for another time. Moving the TV off the fireplace would make the biggest difference here.
