If these can be saved, ... and it looks like they can, ... you should be able to just plop them into some fresh, barely damp soil, and they should recover.

It might be a month or two ...

Your plants are totally savable. Because they had what seems like a root rot or root decay issue, you want to remove as much of the current neck (main stem) as possible. This will prevent the fungus from travelling upwards if rot is the issue. Then we'll have to reroot the plants. Here's how:

1. Take a sharp knife or blade (box cutter blades are fine), and sterilze it with isopropyl alcohol.

2. Take the plants and peel off outer leaves until you have a small crown of 2 to 4 rows of leaves. This will make the main stem even longer.

3. After that, you can chop off the stem. The cut point is about half an inch below the leaves, or as high up as possible.

4. Finally, root the crowns in damp vermiculite or soil. You can bag them for extra humidity if needed. They should root in about 2 to 5 weeks. If bagged, make sure the plastic doesn't touch the leaves--this can cause powdery mildew.

When you do all this, always use new soil. If you have to reuse the old pots, sterilize those with bleach/soap & hot water.

I think your plants will be just fine! :o)

It sounds like all your plants are sentimental to you. Since they'll be under plastic and recuperating for a while, why not pick up a new, pretty, blooming violet to brighten the space in the meantime. Shopping for a new pup is almost as must fun as raising him. :-)
