Is the hardware and shower frame brassy or nickel colored?

I would start by priming with white primer over all the brown paint -- you'll have to do that anyway, and it will make it easier to see what you've got. Then take down the drapes. You might be nearly done at that point, or post new photos and we'll see what seems good from there.

It is brassy - I wish I could take shower out and move sink over there but can't. I'll post more after I prime

Look at Benjamin Moore "Heaven on Earth" as a pale blue that will look good with your floor and the brassy hardware. You could still use brown towels and accessories.

I like what you have done. I would put my money and effort into a new vanity. I like the curtain effect. I would do wallpaper. Best wishes!

I have the same vanity in the guest bathroom. we painted ours "denim" by sherwin Williams and the masterbath "Healing Aloe" by Benjamin Moore. I like both bathrooms. Blue is my favorite color though.

You should definitely remove the drapery and matching accessories if you want it to look <<updated>>. You could also change the small shelf over the toilet and the pole with hand towels for something more simple and less embellished if you want to put patterned wallpaper. That way, you would avoid the room to look overloaded with details. Did you have any color ideas?

The rest of house is decorated in the reds, greens, cream. Out of style so ----would a light blue be ok? Should I go more nuetral? Hope to move within 5 years.

I personally like more formal handtowels but that might just be how I was raised. Some people don't do matching handtowels or guest towels at all.

As for matching the red of the rest of the house, the restroom has a door so it doesn't need to match any other room. If it is one of those new style bathrooms that has no door (mostly master bathrooms) it should tie in but otherwise a restroom is a good place for a pop of color.

i would swap out the light fixture though.

Hi there, I agree with acm and start by priming and getting rid of the accessories and curtains - then you can see the bare bones and what kind of space you're really working with here. You might not need to do all that much, believe it or not just a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference. For me, the accessories make the space feel dated as well so I would try to purge it and go with a more modern black&white artwork of photograph. I also think that since your flooring is on the warmer tone, a light blueish paint color for the walls would really compliment it and also make the space feel more fresh. In addition, I'd paint the vanity cabinets black or dark grey and match the hardware finish to the brassy tone of your faucet. I also suggest you build a frame around your existing mirror, preferably in a gold finish, to really make it pop and install a new light fixture, maybe something fun like the one below. I did a few quick sketches below:

The most simple and least expensive things to do would be .... paint the walls a light neutral color, paint the vanity a darker neutral color, get a frame less glass shower door and new sink fixtures. Then update art and towels.

Tips on painting the vanity? Do I have to sand it all down and go from there?

I would suggest to change the color to white, so it will be more lighter than the dark color brown that you have right now.

Yes, it would be a good idea to sand it down. You should also look into a furniture and cabinets paint.
