Rootstock or just large leaves?

I have a couple new branches that have popped up on my blood orange. most of the branches look like they are coming off the graft but the leaves look different.

The leaves in third photo attach to the spot on the forth photo.

That is without a doubt a water sprout, C35 would have leaves of three and look nothing like the rest of your tree. It's a sign your tree is happy, no need to remove it. If it gets too out of control you can trim it back to the top of the tree's canopy over the winter. This is what C35 looks like when it's a rootstock sucker.

Could just be vigorous shoots (water sprouts). Can't see the whole plant base, but they look too high up for rootstock. How long has this plant been in the ground? Perhaps it's just now getting well established?

It was planted right around June 5th. I certainly think you could be right but I just wanted to check since the leaves looked different.

I can't really compare the two leaf types (or petioles) very well from your photos.

But I think it's a lot safer following down the branch in question to the base of it to see where it is originating from -- that is, above or below a graft line (which I can't see from your photo either).

The leaves in the first two photos connect to branches that have the "normal" leaves and don't look like rootstock. I think waterspouts could be the answer. Definetly welcome all opinions and thanks for your response!

They're water sprouts and should be removed.

I do think they are just waterspouts... but you do NOT need to remove them! It all depends on the eventual shape/size that you want it to take on. Allowing them to grow will form its natural tendency... a bush. Shrubbery is good!

BTW: what is the rootstock?- George

Susanne, Yes C-35 if trifoliate. I have a few trees on it and all of their sprouts/suckers look just like evens photo.

How to differentiate between C35 and flying dragon? My var. lemon is on a rootstock that has two sprouts with leaves like that and I just assumed (wrongly?) it would be flying dragon

My understanding is that flying dragon isn't as widely used as I was previous led to believe. The only trees I know (have been told) that are on it are my Seville, Kishu and Buddahs had from One Green World. They specifically list root stock on their website so providing that's not false... I had been rubbing off suckers as they formed but will try and remember to take a photo of it the next time I see some. I know there are a few trifoliate root stocks but I've knowingly only come across C-35 and Flying dragon, my others aren't labeled.
