First time growing Plumeria (CA)

I bought my first plumeria cutting from Maui last February but didn't plant it until the middle of May. I want to say within three weeks the tip and new little leaves were already starting to grow. I live in the Bay Area so I would leave it outside all day and then at night bring it back in. Every week it would have major growth whether it was the tip which I later found out were blooms or leaves. The middle of July it bloomed and I got some flowers! They were a lot smaller than I thought they would be and they only lasted about a week before they started dying and falling off. I got two more flowers after that that lasted about the same amount of time. Since then I have had a lot more leaves grow and it looks like it's starting to branch out if that makes any sense. Is it usual to only flower that short amount of time? I'm also amazed at how many new leaves are growing. I don't know much from what I researched on the internet so any insight would be really helpful. Thanks!

Brittany, Congratulations on your bloom. It is pretty cool that you got bloom from your small cutting. That is awesome. It sounds like you are doing great with whatever you are doing to see bloom, growth, and branching. Where are you in Bay Area? I am in San Jose. I don't have much experience and only have small seedling plants given to me by a member here and trying to start some cuttings. Toshi and Aileen on here locally in Santa Clara has some great plants. I have seen their multiple pants doing well and blooming so it gives me hope and they are the nicest people ever with their time and knowledge so you can try to look them up. I will make introduction when I can. Toshi also has cuttings for sale at very reasonable price and his cuttings are bigger than what you would normally see. What you are doing with regarding making sure plant is not affected by cold weather is perfect so you will need to figure out what you will do during winter during dormancy stage. Over watering has been my issue with desert rose and I am weary about my first winter too with my plumerias. So far I have learned that you barely need to water them if at all but closely monitor to make sure that they do not dry out but err on the dry side. I have seen growers have in-ground plumeria which gives me more hope but they had to really protect it during winter season. The in-ground plumeria I saw at Toshi is quite large next to brick was in front of his home. He said he protects it during winter/rain season but still has rotting issue with some branches.

Thanks Andre, do you have any pictures of your seedling plants? I would love see them. My aunt has a plumeria that she planted three years ago and it's only flowered once in that time but it's pretty tall and has big leaves. I recently saw assorted plumerias at Orchard supply so I was thinking of buying one since I would like to try growing some more next year.

    Hi Brittany,

It appears, from the great chronological dipiction you posted, that when you started out rooting your cutting you had the beginnings of an inflo (flower head). So plant growth energy went into rooting, growing the flowers and later, also the leaves. So it's reasonable that you got flowers that we're a bit underwhelming. These have been called "rooting flowers" and are to be expected if you "flower" while rooting. I have many plants that were started from cuttings and they produce smaller less impressive flowers too. As your plants matures, branches, get proper care and feeding over several seasons... it's sure to produce more abundant and better bigger flowers. Congratulations on your success.

Wow I feel like I got lucky with my cutting! Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate it. Do you know if they only flower once every year?

Brittany, here you go. One of them growing well but the other one keep losing its leaves. So not sure what is going on. Also trying to root some cuttings right now. Just trying to learn from experts here and hope to have bloom in 2-3 years.

They look good to me! That's pretty cool you grew those from seedlings. I'm trying to become more knowledgeable as well.

Hi Josue, your neighbors plumeria must be beautiful. I would love to be able to plant mine into the ground but I am nervous about the winter months. I'm not really sure what to do with mine besides bring it inside during that time. I've kind of just let my plumeria do it's thing and just gone along with it. Good luck with yours!
