Buffet and dining table decor help

Would love suggestions on buffet decor and dining table center piece. I already know some do not like my mirror over buffet but I do so no changes there. My chandelier looks high in photo but in person it is 29" above table. Would a lamp look nice on buffet? Thanks for your help in advance.

It's not ideal but trying to save you some $$. If you had some greenery or flower sprays in it you could easily create the illusion of round. For example, some lavender sprays would bring out the lilac in the large art or faux fern stems or even mini maple leaves. Pier 1 have a huge range of colours/sprays that might work as would many other outlets. Hiding any other vessels of any description or colour?

Let's see what Flo comes up with tomorrow & costs involved. Flo - you must be disappointed that the gold vase did not meet spec (aluminium) but I'm sure the gold coloured terracotta is equally nice. Looking forward to seeing it.

Frosted - Before Christmas you said that you liked the idea of a plate on a stand on the buffet - not sure if you are still interested in that concept?? If so, this plate might be a possibility. Complements both pieces of art and the bases of the buffet lamps. 15.5" diameter but you would gain an extra 2" in height with a stand. $70 on Etsy. You would need to measure if you were interested as positioning in mock up is just a guess.

That is a very pretty plate and I like the idea of a plate on the buffet. I also think the elliptical shape of the mosaic looks better on the buffet. Here’s a round clear vase that might work as an example of what will work on the table. . . and the gold plate.

I love that large plate on the buffet. Clean, simple and yet dramatic in it's simplicity. Size is key, so Frosted, get out your cardboard and do a "mock up" for size. The greenery I had for the container I got, isn't working right, so I have to go get something better. So, it will be later today before I get back to play with that. I don't think big leafs are going to work as I had hoped because of the width of the vase. I am going to look for something else. I will post results if I find a good combo. I love the vase all by itself so no worries there.

Frosted...I am so happy you are considering the platter/Plate on stand again for the buffet..do you need me to post info for the Trisha Yearwood one again? The blue is just so beautiful on it:)

HIWE - have you seen that Trisha plate in person? I have it in my Amazon cart

Aspree - I like the Etsy plate.

All - pros/cons of each plate:

Trisha plate: comes with 3 in stand; only 49.50 w/free ship & returns w/my prime acct; I love the blue color; 16" round add'l 3 in height w/stand; some did not like all blue with buffet lamps

Etsy plate: colors complement the lamps; 15.5" round and would need to purchase a stand; Con - $70 plus $35 shipping & no free returns

Attached is a 14" plate just to give idea of sizing which is on a flat stand, pic of the Trisha plate and Etsy plate

    Do we vote?

Another pic just to help visualize sizing of 2 plates above. This plate still 14" round but at 15" high w/different stand.

Just found two more for you to look at....I love the colors in the Etsy plate but not crazy about the flowers...love the Trisha Yearwood the color looks very saturated...but thought you might like this peacock plate! The Trisha mosiac is very nice too!

I think the sizes on all of them will work well...14” sample is just a bit to small.

My vote. Not a fan of Blue plate with lamps. Like the Etsy plate but with all the added expense it becomes pretty pricy. I would choose a larger plate with just a plate being on the buffet between the lamps. I think we should keep looking.

I think the blue is exactly what you need on that buffet...your living room fireplace is flanked with black floor lamps with the peacock art as the pop of color and the buffet is neutral with the black lamps a blue plate or bowl would be a wonderful accent.

Hi Frosted! Although I think both of the plates are lovely, I don't think either of them are right scale or even the right dimension/volume. I also honestly don't like the reflection of back side of plate here. IMO, your existing mosaic vase with greens like you considered for table would look better and then keep focus of some color etc on your table between hurricanes. JMO

Hi Imhofan - the 2nd pic I posted of the white plates are actually two of the same plates and not a reflection. Just in case that made a difference in your opinion of a plate on buffet.

Some plates from Pier 1. A little more money. I agree with Imhofan about mosaic vase on buffet and vase (simple round glass for versatility) with hurricanes on table. . . from a pragmatic point of view.

oh yes, I realized you had two white plates there. I just don't like seeing a flat back (most are solid painted etc)---but that is just me. In front of mirrors, I prefer more 3 dimensional decor, nicer view from all sides (front, side from kitchen and LR side and the back/mirror side).

I cut fronds from the majestic palm I killed just to visualize green in Mosaic vase on buffet...albeit they are more brown than green poor thing.

I think the vase is perfect with your lamps and scale w/the upright texture and a brighter :) green color is beautiful. What do you think Frosted?

    last modified: 8 years ago

Imhofan- I do keep going back to my mosaic vase. It looks more red in pics but not in person & definitely black and gold. I would like it with brighter greens or I've always liked it with some cherry blossoms. In this pic...I know the stems need to be placed in vase better.

Yes, I like that too. I think it looks like the vase is made for between the lamps and shape/size/color is perfect IMO. You could try both the cherry blossoms and grab some greens and use what you like best. I think green palms/fronds look a bit more updated and like texture and green color, but is all good! Use the budget for something you love between your hurricanes :)

I like the iris plate, but I prefer the bronze and black vase with some white blossoms of cherry or apple. That just seems most interesting with the lamps bases.

Pretty linens and dishes sound lovely--love white dishes, I have charger similar to yours too and love how they add a casual texture and base for your plates etc. I see greens that go out and up-- about where your brown palms demo did---2/3 to 3/4 ht of lamps. I will look for some "green" pics--where is the rest of the gang---anyone with good greenery source?

In meantime, I thought of you yesterday and your table. Have you seen the new Wm Sonoma Home catalog? They have some darling small better priced ginger jars for florals (or without) that would work w/your hurricanes (and blue works fine w/ your existing placemats if desired). 20% off right now.

I will search for greens, others please chime in:)

Frosted, here is an example of the style I could see, but they are a just a bit too big and large as pictured. Three stems might work cut down though. These are from Ballard Design.

Maybe deciding on the the table and then coordinate vase filler with?

Frosted I went right back through the thread to the point where we first put the mosaic vase on the buffet with the blossoms, just after the buffet lamps arrived.

Your comment 24 hours later was "So the Mosaic with the one
blossom on buffet? Gotta say I'm sitting at my table now
    and love it. So classy".

This statement says it all...there is nothing to add; the arrangement made you very, very happy & nothing else matters. Put the mosaic with the blossom back on the buffet asap.

Frosted. Allanaspree has spoken. Haha. I, of course, agree completely. I’ll take a pic tomorrow of some cute stems I got recently at Hobby Lobby for my tall vase on my tub. Getting ready to go nite-nite.
Frosted, just getting caught up and I agree with Imhofan too. I like the mosaic with stems in it on your buffet better than a plate also. Love the idea of some ginger jars in the blue with the hurricanes in your table. Frontgate also has some nice ones, but the size of them would help determine what works best here. You don’t want them too large. A cluster of three smaller ones would work well.
Frosted. Here are some silk stems I bought recently for a tall jar on my tub. The trick here is the small opening. I took just 3 stems and slipped into the jar. Did a tad of arranging but left them on their own. Delicate and a really nice light green on the stems. Silk wrapped not plastic makes them look nicer. I switch this out with poppies and other stems throughout the year. Just fold the long stem to fit your vase.
Some silk stems from Petals.com. The vase with three magnolia stems would be lovely on your table between hurricanes. So would the ginger jars but I’m trying to be economical. . . Champagne taste on a beer budget that’s me!

If you do any kind of flower or stems on buffet don’t repeat that on dining table.....I would do stems or flowers on dining table and simple decor on buffet. You have the buffet the sofa table and dining all in the same area so simple accessories maybe nothing on buffet and pull lamps in a bit more...the mirror makes a very big statement and if I remember right the bottom of the lamps are tiger print...maybe just a tray? Don’t over accessorize is my suggestion.

Here is the vase! I don’t have the right stems yet but i wanted you to see it. Of course, i have Christmas everywhere waiting for our family Marathon/Christmas celebration! Ignore that. I also looked harder at the material this vase is made from and it is some sort of metal after all.

Agree with Allanaspree, Flo, Tammy and Seajay and others to keep the mosaic vase on the buffet. It looks fabulous there and looks like it was chosen specifically for buffet. Either w/cherry blossoms or simple greens. I like the texture of 3-5 simple green (banana or palm) leaves and/or you could try one splash of color as in pic below. I found an online resource, but if you bring your vase in to a floral with pics they can get it right w/options you can feel/see in person. Example:

For between your table hurricanes, which are perfect for your table, if want low vs ht of the blue/white jars, perhaps a low bowl with green moss balls (see BD)

or peacock feather covered balls:) in a brass such as this (this is banana leaf brass tray on sale at wmsonoma home):

I get my best florals from a local, awesome wholesale place. They have authentic stems of everything. Love it. A little hike for me to get over there but love the owners and we have worked together for many years!

Wow - lots of great ideas. I definitely want to use my Mosaic vase on buffet. It does look great in person and makes me happy.

Flo - your SeaJay vase looks great! Yes, send me your stems! :)

Love the idea of palm or banana greens in the Mosaic. We do have a hobby lobby here but not a Michaels. I'm not certain about floral shops here & will need to research. I can switch out with something like SeaJay posted with her lovely gold vase or my cherry blossoms depending on mood.

Again, want to keep 2 PB hurricanes but not sure I like the Ming blue color between. Here is a pic of that blue color on table. Just not loving it.

Like Imofan idea of one item between them. I will also put a vase of fresh flowers there occasionally throughout the spring and summer.

Frosted - whatever flowers/greenery you put on the buffet I would like to see it "soft" as you have a lot of hard surfaces/lines in that area. I wonder if the banana/monstera type leaves are going to soften it enough? I think you liked the cherry blossoms because it softened the look. You might consider some type of fern stems or maidenhair stems or other - silk or real touch not plastic. See below to give you an idea of what I mean

Bottom pic in mock up is an example of vase of silk maidenhair stems & bottom right is the arrangement you always liked - again a soft look. JMO - up to you as you are the one that has to look at it everyday!

If you do two large leaves get them fresh from local florist..they last a long time and look so much better than artificial..agree the Ming plates or ginger jars are not a good fit with your decor...the cherry blossoms looked nice in your vase if that is the direction you are going for the buffet...honestly you really don’t need to add anything else to your table..the hurricanes are simple and classic and easy to remove if needed....they look very nice with your lighting.

Frosted - stumbled across these on Etsy - super cute. You can get them with a white base or a gold base & in various shapes of succulents. Seller might even be able to make a larger one maybe even one with a black base. A grouping or a larger one might work between the hurricanes?

    Larger one?

Also wondering what your little terrarium might look like between the hurricanes - worth a try. Also HIWE has a point - maybe the 2 huricanes (a little closer together) may be sufficient. Sort out your buffet & then stand back & assess as the buffet will be the focal point at that end as you walk in

Frosted and Allanaspree. Those are cute. I came across this Egyptian vase and thought it could stand on its own between the hurricanes or you could add one stem, or several, or a succulent or two. . . any desired combination. Very unusual.

I Love that rounder leaf eucalyptus....

Just checking in before bed. Flo - nice find. I agree with you and HIWE about that airy rounded eucalyptus. I think that is why I liked the cherry blossoms - airy look. I'm not fond of maidenhair fake plant or large fronds on buffet. This one you posted is the best I've seen as far as style, texture and green color. Do you know where I can find that eucalyptus?

I moved the 2 Hurricsnes closer together on my table as suggested and really don't see a need for anything else. ASpree - I tried my terrarium between and did not like it.

Again, when I buy fresh flowers in the spring and summer I can add them in between the hurricanes. May just need to find a more modern vase for fresh flowers. All mine a fairly generic. Thank you Gals!

Frosted...your local florist can get that eucalyptus fresh for you..it lasts so long..or can order dried for you.

Thanks HIWE - I may go with dried because I cannot put water in that vase. Or does it need water if fresh? Knowing me and plants I'm better with dried. I have spent lots of money on plants and they died within a few months or less. (:

Will be interesting to see how the grey/green of eucalyptus looks there. Real is of course nice, but I'm not sure you will get the nice forming ability w/real vs silk. Real doesn't need water and will just dry on it's own. Bring your vase in and the florist can get it right--one and done :)

Frosted I don’t get notifications so just checking in on your dilemma. To answer your question the real or dried eucalyptus does not need water. The real without water will dry out in its own and be nice. I like the cherry blossoms in your mosaic too. Hope you’re doing ok and your Mama too.
