They should be ok to separate. Try it with one and see how it goes. What are you planning to do with more than 72 plants? Just curious.

They can be separated, no problem. Replant right up to the level of the lowest leaves and they will root from the stem making sturdier plants. Although a few might be a held back a bit I personally don't mind that. Although a neat row of identical plants looks good I don't actually want all my vegetables ready at the same time.

Just did a search for similar info. 72 tray with lots of doubles. Wondered if separation or clipping was best since it says they dont like transplant root damage very well. I have roots dangling into a little water in the tray. Was also wondering if I can clip off some of the very lengthy roots (like I do with many plants) to make transplant easier? I guess I will find out. I'll try a couple and if I need to clip plants I wanted to at least be able to eat the extra starts.

Did you read the previous posts? In my experience brassicas couldn’t care less about being transplanted and root damage doesn’t faze them at all. Why waste the duplicates? I always plant all mine out. These are two types of kale on their second transplant before going into the garden. They were started in a clump in a single pot.

Thanks, yes I read it but doesn't hurt for opinions. Mine is nappa cabbage and don't know if there is a difference. Anyways I pulled a wilted one out and the cells are full of roots so I need to transplant right away. We are looking at 90deg days for a few so I may not do it untill at least the possible rain day in A few days. I'm planting for fall.
