The Star Ruby, or Rio Star is darker and sweeter. You will need a big container if you want fruit.

How big of a container do you think I will need?

I am not a container expert; but I would think maybe 10 gallons.

I hate being the bearer of sad news. Yes, you are correct, you can grow a very high quality grapefruit inside a greenhouse. The one draw back is that in order to obtain an excellent crop with good taste, you will need to maintain the high heat temperature and humidity required. In a northern state like Michigan you will have a prize winning heat bill throughout the winter months

Susanne, I have one and it has five grapefruits that are not ready yet. It is still a relatively young tree - a Ray Ruby - about 5.5' in the container. The fruits look like they may be staring to ripen a little but they still have a ways to go. I can tell you once I try them, however, Maryland summers are VERY hot and humid like Silica mentioned, so perhaps they will ripen a bit better. I also have the winter setup and those lights provide quite a bit of heat. We shall see...

well, maybe we need solar panels ;)

Laura looking forward to hear about your grapefruit. I ordered the Rio red from FW and it says that it needs a bit less heat to get sweet. At least give it a try and if it works, great and if not, I tried. Yup summer can get hot and humid here, just not as long and consistent as other areas.

You will want a 100 gallon container to grow grapefruit and I would recommend a 4 foot by 4 foot by 2 foot box for your tree. I would also suggest getting your grapefruit on Flying dragon or US897 rootstock. You will be very pleased.
