Our Crazy Kitchen remodel

last modified: 9 years ago

I know kitchen remodels are something you should not take lightly or do in a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants fashion but thats exactly what we did. My uncle is a builder and is here visiting for a few months and has been willing to help us do it ourselves. This is our kitchen right before we started:

Yes that is a popcorn ceiling! The plan is to take out the fur downs and the bar, move the fridge to the other side, replace the old cabinets with new-to-us cabinets, add cabinet organization, build a plate rack, add a new countertop and subway tile as a backsplash, replace the sink and faucet, scrape and re texture the ceiling, update with can lights and add under counter task lighting, extend one wall, update the window sil, and patch the floor where we took out the bar.

whew! I'm tired just remembering the plan! Here is where we are at three weeks in:

Furdowns are gone! Ceiling has been floated and textured, new lights are in. The new-to-us cabinets have been found, transported, retrofitted, and installed. The cabinet organization plan has been created and organizers have been ordered. The window sil has been prepped for granite/quartz with top and sides sheetrocked. Bar taken out, fridge moved, and flooring filled in. New electrical run, and wall extended. Major appliances either replaced or reinstalled.

We still need countertops and to tile the backsplash and to install the new sink and faucet. Hubby is starting on the plate rack for the back wall. We also haven't decided on hardware for the cabinets. Hubby wants to leave them bare, I'm thinking of something like this:

We have a template schedule day for later in September so now it's time to hurry up and wait and make decisions on the remaining things.

Oh yeah... and our budget is under 5,000 dollars.
