To cut the leaf or not cut the leaf?

Ok, so I am just wondering what you guys think or whether it makes a difference... When you propogate leaves and once they root do you think it makes a big difference to cut the top segment off the leaf to get babies sooner??

I find it makes different. Let's see what other people say.

I have not done any experiments to justify my position but I always cut the leaf in half. I think it makes better use of the growing abilities of the leaf. Put more of that energy into making roots and new plants instead of maintaining one giant mass of plant matter in a leaf.

I was recently gifted a leaf of "Ann". Of course I cut it in half and planted both pieces. Another good reason to cut em. Just my opinion though.

Ok, waittt a second... you can put both pieces down?!? How did I not know this.

Regarding Ann. Neil Lipson wrote an article in AV magazine about this stubborn b-ch. Sorry, beauty.

Ann has a lot of variegation - and it takes forever to give babies. The white part of the leaf catches rot - and oops... another fatality. So he carefully trims the white part off with a blade leaving only viable green part of the leaf - puts it to root - and it works. IT WORKS. I tried.

Regarding taking a tip off - serves 2 purposes - speeds up the babies and limits the growth of the mama-leaf. Some leaves double in size instead giving us plantlets. Older wavy leaves varieties - Seafoam, Firebird 2 - and especially Granger's Heart Desire... leaf will grow to the palm size. Very awkward and easy to break.

Regarding splitting leaf in half and putting both peaces down. Works - but the tip takes much longer to produce babies and gives you one or 2. I do not do it on purpose - only if it is the only viable piece left. If the leaf stem broke off - I cut the sides of the leaf creating a triangle - and stick the new "stem" in a soil. Works.

I never tried it out, but maybe I will in the future. Didn't know it helps speed it up.

Irina... here are my leaves of Ann (The b*ch-ha) that I just put down.. should I do anything different to them??...

    Looking very good!

There really green ones so hoping for the best not alot of white in the leaves. Just ordered these so I will wait patiently (sort of)

You will have your babies in spring...

Why did you order so many???

I only ordered one pair! She sent all those extras hah.

If the leaf is big enough then I do V cut and put both down. If the leaf is small I just break the tip.

too may babies ... way too many... not from Ann.... from everything else.

Hmmm. Good to know about trimming the white portion off the leaf. Mine are already set so I am going to leave them like they are but I will have some other, expensive, heavily variegated plant leaves to propagate soon and I will try it then.

I have decided that I am NOT going to propagate ANY more leaves or cuttings from any plants that I don't have somebody or someplace in mind for them to go when they're grown. I have done enough to where I have a 90 to 95% success ratio. No more room on the shelves for generic doubles or triples of non remarkable plants.

I may have to try my luck at selling some of the leaves or starter plants off my more expensive plants. I have just about worn out my welcome amongst my normal AV recipients!
