I am not a very knowledgeable about the commercial growing of avos. In fact I don't even know much about the hobby growing of them. But, until someone more knowledgeable comes along, here are my thoughts on the subject.

Avo trees are BIG trees. I see older yard trees around town that are near, if not more than, the 20 meter height given by Wikipedia for a mature tree. Those trees have a drip line at least 30' [10m] in diameter, if not more.

I have inter-planted my avo trees with citrus and other fruit trees. The recommended spacing I found, I believe it was for the citrus, was 20'. I spaced my trees at about 15 to 20' [5 - 7m]. They do look as if they may become a bit crowded as the trees grow larger. But, I intend to prune the trees to keep them compact and easily reachable from a 10' ladder. From your post, I infer that you will be trying to grow for income. I would think that a 20' [7m] spacing would be more reasonable for a working orchard, maybe even more for efficiency of care, maintenance, and harvest.

I just do not see avos planted in a 10'x10' space for commercial growing.

I'm thinking that they might be right. If I'm reading your post correct your trees are spaced 10' in one direction and 17' in the other. You may need to remove every other row in the 10' direction.

As I said, I know nothing.
