You could seat up to ten around the fireplace if you put a sofa directly across from the fireplace with two chairs to the left and a bench to the right to minimize the obstruction through the entryway. Then you could put a couple of stools or poufs directly in front of the fireplace for kids and a rectangular coffee table in the center.

I can see how the door next to the fireplace cramps furniture placement just a little. You didn't give any measurements, but I've taken each square of your drawing to be 1 ft. The light blue indicates traffic flow between exterior doors. I have assumed entry to this seating area would come from the walkway in front of the stairs.

The layout below shows two 7 ft sofas and a 5 ft loveseat. In my opinion this provides the best placement of seating. I didn't draw in any end or coffee tables but you could place end tables on either side of the sofas and a rectangular coffee table in the middle. This gives you seating for eight.

Furniture size is not truly standard. For a while, a chair could take up as much room as a loveseat because the arms were so wide, but arms have shrunk to a more reasonable 6-8". Still, a sofa ranges from 6-7 ft wide though some can be found up to 8 ft. Loveseats are 4-5 ft and most chairs are just under 3 ft. Measure your space before you go to the store, and take a tape measure with you to the store to make sure an item will fit.

I think a sectional would work. A sectional would let you view a TV placed against the stairway if you wanted. You just need to make sure you get one that faces the correct way. If guests in this place are not family, a sectional will not seat very many. People don't want to sit that close unless adults with cuddly age children. Pretty small space to seat that many people. Can you provide size of spaces. You need at least 3' for walking through the spaces as well, so that really takes away from floor space for seating. In addition, you have the "viewing porch" so you don't want a lot obstructing what is the "view" on that wall. Does the fireplace have to go on the short wall? Could it go on the window wall. That might give you a lot more ability for furniture and seating and views as well. You can get a low profile fireplace to minimize interruption of the view?

in addition most recommend you go full size sofa and no love seats. could you give measurements? one thing i think would help is go with leaner furniture. a good option is the danish furnishings. they also tend to be sturdy and easy to replace the covers if they get ruined.

The fireplace is already in place. The TV will be mounted on it. The View is of the mountains. It is a great room with a 25ft cathedral ceiling and a wall of windows to the left of the fireplace. Every square in drawing is one foot. Good point about the sectional. I'm kind of stuck with utilizing full size furniture because of the height of the ceiling and openness.

Definitely going leather! I'm not sure if the Danish furniture would be in scale with the room with 25 ft ceiling and openness. But I do love the sofa you posted:)

I found a picture similar to what I was suggesting, but it has a chair where I thought you might try a bench.

Here are some bench options...

You could store marshmallow skewers and binoculars in this last one! Or something boring like blankets, LOL. All the benches except the red one are 60" long.

I think a hefty coffee table would be nice to anchor all the seating...

mindshift is thinking along the same lines I was thinking. I was trying to figure out how to make the whole space into two seating and some dining space. But if the fireplace is fixed then this doesn't help you get the seating you desire. I think mindshift's concept is probably the best. I would take a look at some "condo" sized pieces for the seating area. try looking at www.joybird.com They have some great pieces with good sizing, and good moderate pricing you might like. Takes a while to get the pieces, but I have had good luck with their quality. Going to be great place for sure! Enjoy!

I'd go with two mid-century chairs (streamlined width) vs. a love seat. JMHO.

april, i looked at the drawing again, because you did not give measurements as asked. the drawing gets no larger on my system it actually gets smaller. i am reading, after pass through area, 10 x15. if you are not using the entire area for sitting, you are discussing very little space for sitting. the reason i suggested that seating is because, as suspected, there is not enough room for larger furniture. sometimes you have to choose between fit and perfect looks.

but perhaps i am looking at this incorrectly. did you just want a wonderful room and then they can just pull up dining room chairs for the rest of the seating?

I can't figure out how to post to replies individually! The room is about 16x16-17 ft. I agree that big arm furniture my be too bulky and more streamline furniture a better look. My only concern is that the furniture may get lost in the room because of the open floor plan and height of ceilings. The pic I'm including is a similar home that was built by same builder.

The pictures are a great visual. Even if you decided to go with more than one leather sofa, the ones pictured here don't look as bulky as some.

I vote for a mixed seating option, because not everyone likes to sit on a sofa. Some people like their own chair, and children don't usually sit still for very long and might even prefer a floor pillow (you could put a couple under the coffee table or stacked in the corner).

Don't let the ceiling height affect your furniture decisions. It is the floor space you have that counts. You might consider some "campaign chairs". These are great seating and could be used at dining table and in seating area. They fold up too for easy stage if needed. They have a relaxed look too. I will post an example. Bbl

Great, yes, I just thought of them for your space. You could have several of these and handle a lot of people comfortably. They aren't cheap but very durable and easy to set up if you don't need them all at one time. Glad that might be of help!
