That beam is always going to divide the spaces, but you might mitigate. it by painting it to match the ceiling. If you're up for painting the whole space, you might paint walls and ceiling the same.

Replace the dining table with a smaller round one, move the armoire fully. into the seating area and add a couple of chairs facing the sofa.

I see what you mean by painting it all one color...it definitely makes it more cohesive. I am going to go with a round table in front of the window seat....the problem I have is the room is only about ten feet wide .. I have placed a couple of dining chairs to show you.. I love the haired you picked out but I'm afraid they would be too big?? Do you think the armoire is dated and should go?? Maybe just a desk? Thanks so much

You need a large rug to anchor/ define...whatever... the living space

Re the armoire, I think it's both too big, and too much wood for your space. I like your idea of replacing it with a streamlined desk, then display art above it.
