Ok I did the mirror above the entry table. I had to hang it a bit high because of the light switch, so now I guess I need to find some tallish decor items for the table.

Yes, perhaps a larger lantern on the left in front of the switches and overlapping the mirror a bit with a stack of books perhaps on the other side and a small deco item on top of the books.

Possibly a metal atrium just depends on size.

Probably something more narrow for that table and modern, like this.

You have to make sure the one on the left (I like the orchid) is tallest piece then step down the next piece to be lower. What I like about the orchid is you can bend the flowering stems to suit your space. The Gladiolas are straight and might not work as well. What is the height of that piece?

The tallest piece would go on the left to hide the switch plate of course. Then on the right side you could do a black box, a stack of black bound books, but repeating the black of the table would be nice.

It's 35". Maybe that is too tall like you said. I was kind of picturing something like this...

That styling is very eclectic and your dining room is quite modern, so cleaner lines would be my suggestion. You do like bushy branches don't you! lol

Haha it seems so! I just meant the mirror/plant, the rest of the styling isn't really my taste. Maybe I'll try a real orchid, although I tend to kill every live plant I buy. I feel like the artificial orchids always look too fake.

I feel like your dining nook curtains don't add much. Maybe extend the curtain rod and add opaque curtains. Just my 2 cents.

If you get a good orchid, they are making them so lifelike it is hard to tell. I got a friend of mine one and guess what, she watered it!! When I told her it was fake she couldn't believe it. We got a big laugh out of that! I like the orchid touch because it is very sleek and modern feeling and not too "fluffy" if you know what I mean.

Cheap orchids do look fake. You have to buy good ones to get lifelike looks. Even the leafs have a waxy feel like for real! I have a pretty green thumb, but live orchids are OK for about 6 weeks and then caput! Probably overwater, although I try to be very careful on watering. Anyway, for really good looking ones, Gumps has great ones. Check their website. A good one of the size you need will run around $100. Depending on the container.

Lynne I like what you've done with dining room. Painting, no sconces, vase looks great in living room. Do get a round tray for table. I had this picked but there are plenty of places to get trays you like.

I had this really fake looking orchid laying around. To give you scale, here is a photo. It is 29" tall.

I would move the console to right just slightly so that you could lower/ bring the mirror down a bit without running into the lightswitch. Mirro seems a bit high.

Your question regarding valance, I don't see a valance.... are you referring to the drape panels?

I would reverse arrangement. The idea for orchid is to somewhat hide the switches. Try that.

I think I will try to move the mirror down and to the right a bit as someone suggested so the light switch isn't in the way. I hope it doesn't look funny when it isn't centered on the wall. I don't like 'hiding' the switches because my 2 toddler boys use them and I'm afraid they will knock over anything in front.

Better. If you slide table over to right the switches will be available but not so noticeable. Yes, it is ok then to lower mirror about 3" and center over table. Coming along nicely. I have a tip for you. I think you have a tendency to do too much. So when you create a spot, take one item away. We call it "editing". You have good instincts so keep things a touch more simple and you will enjoy the results. ;))

Yes, when you move the mirror, though it is a small hassle, you will then not worry about the switch plate and mirror being knocked! :)

Do you think it will look ok to move the mirror? Im afraid it will look bad because it won't be centered on the wall..

It will look better moved to the right and centered between the edge of your step on left and right corner.

Ok so I'm starting from scratch on the entryway table. I have to wait for my husband to move the mirror down and to the right for me. I am thinking of doing this blue vase with some sprigs of something in it (the white flowers are just placeholders for now). Then another smaller vase along the same lines as the placeholder gray one. Thinking maybe a modern lamp or lantern like Flo suggested on the left. If it isn't too much, maybe a few books with a paperweight on top in the middle.

Long story short, yay or nay on these baskets? I tried 2 under the table, or just one odd to the side. Thoughts?

Moving your table to the right will work really well. Notice the space at the floor, and center it between that space. Then relocate mirror to center above table. It will look great! Curly willows look good, but I would take a rubber band and put around the stems to cluster them up closer so that stand up straighter. That will make a taller statement. A piece of raffia tying them will also work.

For a more modern look, no baskets. They tend to make for clutter. If you want softer look, place under the table and make sure "stuff" doesn't get thrown in them. Put rolled up throws or blankets, but not things like shoes and newspapers, magazines, etc. I like the vases but I would put them to the left. Then one smaller piece on the right is all you need. We like odd numbers of items. 3 or 5, but for your purposes, staying more modern, fewer is better. Ya-done good so far!!!

I like it alright I suppose. I think my problem is I started with an entryway table that wasn't really what I wanted. I bought it final sale for behind my couch and it was too tall so I just threw it there. I don't love the baskets but feel like the wall looks too bare with nothing underneath, especially with a wall outlet right there.

Plus, decorating is so hard for me so it's a really frustrating process! I went to the craft store today and bought 5 different sprigs to try in the vase and every single one was too short. So back to square one. Also, I discovered a crack in the succulent bowl so I have to hope they can reorder the bowl and transplant all of the succulents. And then I need to decorate the sideboard in my dining nook because I hate how it looks. It's just overwhelming lol

Just breath! You probably tend to take on too much at one time and that is exhausting while still "oh yes, " living!! haha. Just take it easy. It is frustrating, but just think that is what I do all day long. There is frustration, but in the end if you can relax through the "process", it is very rewarding. Visualize yourself sitting in your living room and looking around at the changes you have made and really enjoying how great it looks and how little details can change things a whole lot! I thought the stems in the blue vase were not too short?

Flo, I had 'borrowed' the stems and the gray vase from my mantle to try to get an idea of what I wanted. So I either need to replace those items in the entryway or find something else for the mantle :(

Next up will be this monstrosity lol.

I bought the sideboard from Ikea years ago and I'm so over it. I might have to make it work for awhile though, so I'm going to try to focus on the decor on top of it. And I think I'm going to put something to the left of it. Maybe the vase I have on order from C&B.

Maybe I should start another thread when I start working on this...

Oh and Flo, I could never do what you do! Too many different tastes and personalities. And people probably just disregard your advice all of the time. I would get so annoyed.

Luckily, I just sit at a computer all day and have very little interaction with actual human beings :)

Lynne, I noticed your Ikea unit, and doesn't seem bad... with a teal [or whatever color] in nearby rug.. what about chalk paint over it - repeating art's watery look.

Your painting is a tad high and large for this piece of furniture. What do you have in your entryway? Maybe painting can go somewhere else?

I agree I like something under the sofa table; maybe keep the measurements in your notes on phone and if you see a great deal on a leather bench---maybe in the turquoise from your rug?

Regarding the Ikea table---I think using a vertical piece of art vs the horizontal would work better on the wall. Do you have any existing options? Adding a lamp (or two tall buffet lamps on each end) and maybe serving tray/coasters etc to accessorize as dining piece.

Your picture is very nice but it should be hung lower about 6-8" above buffet. I like imhofan's ideas for the buffet.

The sofa under the windows is too close to the fireplace. Center it on the windows, and then move the rest a bit to agree with it.
