I had practically sworn off acquiring AV's from Lowes, Home Depot, or any other local Big Box store, due to the virtual certainty of bringing home Thrips to my collection.

But, ... about a month ago, I was in Lowes to make another purchase, ... and I happened to see the most beautiful AV specimen for sale.

It was an Optimara Ever Beautiful, ... which I had tried to grow before, but to no avail. In fact, I'd not been able to get any of the "space violets" to do very well for me, so I had kind of given up on them.

But this plant was so tempting, ... I just had to have it. I looked it over good, ... and blew on the bloosoms, to see if any Thrip activity would occur, but I saw no signs.

So I purchased it, brought it home, and put it in isolation, where it has been for the last month. To this point, ... no Thrips, ... only a ton of blossoms ...

Had to stop in Lowe's today and made a detour through the garden center, and what do you know, AVs in 6" pots, all outside! Although this was the shaded area, they had all been left out in the hurricane! Wow, dirt out of pots, dirt all over leaves, the plants had probably been plopped back into their pots, what a mess. In spite of it all they were still pretty healthy-looking, some still with blooms. Probably could have gotten one with a hefty mark down if one asked. But not many people have room for a 6" potted plant in their collection. I think. (I actually don't know very many people who have AV collections.) I don't think any were Space violets as none had wavy leaves.

You have a beautiful plant there Aegis!

Good for you!! Those are the only stores I've gotten AVs from so far and I can say I've never brought thrips back. I think the key is to debud, repot, clean, and treat in a separate part of the house (or even outside if weather permits).

OH NO!!!!! You mean that one in the 6 inch pot with the wavy leaves I saw at Lowe's last week with no flower was a SPACE VIOLET????????? Hang on! Oh no!!!!! Gotta run and see if they still have it! Rosie flying fast!!!!

Well, something came up and I didn't get out of the house. Hey, I didn't say I had ROOM for that 6 inch pot, I just said I WANTED it!!!! See???? I will always make room. Rosie

They'll be more down the road. MyViolet email from a couple of weeks ago had a couple of stores listed that they sent those 6 inchers to.

hahahaha lol That didn't type out to look quite right but I'm keeping it there.
