I love it!!...It's one of those called a "rug cutter" because of the narrow rockers....some times the rockers were added but not always.. Also called a ladder back rocker. It originally had either a rush sear or a split oak or hickory seat.
It's pretty well impossible to date accurately because those chairs were made for well over 100 years. The best way to date it is by the wear...or lack of.
Very nice little chair.....find someone to put a proper seat in it and enjoy it for another 100 years.
Oh.....and that type of finial on the upright posts was often used by the Shakers.

Thanks friends....I have been called "Garbage Brain"...because if I once read it, it's there....somewhere! Also I am 81....been around the block a few times, attended a few auctions andr ead a lot of books!.
Now about that chair....I had one very similar that belonged to my great grandmother. I remember as a teen, her sitting in it and rocking away. When my mother downsized, I asked for the chair....by then painted many times and with a Jerry rigged rope seat... I stripped the white, and some green and got down to the red.
Anyhow I researched that sort of chair....before I had a new split oak seat put in and gave it to my grand daughter.
It had a rung that had been split and mended with fabric wound around and likely soaked with hide glue. The guy who put in the seat wanted to replace the rung....I told him no way!
